Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Conakry — West Africa’s Rainiest Capital
Arrive at Conakry International Airport. Transfer through the bustling capital spread across the Kaloum Peninsula. Afternoon: visit the National Museum (Musée National de Sandervalia) with its collection of masks, statues, and musical instruments. Walk through the colorful Madina Market. Evening: dinner featuring Guinean specialties — maffi (peanut stew) and grilled capitaine (Nile perch) from the Atlantic. Overnight in Conakry.
Day 2: Conakry to Kindia —Gateway to Fouta Djallon
Drive to Kindia (3 hours), the agricultural heartland and gateway to the Fouta Djallon highlands. Visit the Voile de la Mariée (Bride’s Veil) waterfall just outside town. Afternoon: explore Kindia’s vibrant market — one of Guinea’s best for tropical fruits (mangoes, pineapples, avocados). Visit a local farm cooperative producing Guinean coffee. Overnight in Kindia.
Day 3: Dalaba — The Switzerland of West Africa
Drive into the Fouta Djallon highlands to Dalaba (4-5 hours on scenic mountain roads). Dalaba sits at 1,200m altitude, giving it a cool climate that earned it the nickname “Switzerland of West Africa.” The French colonial administrators used it as a summer retreat. Visit the Case à Palabre (traditional meeting hut) and the colonial-era buildings. Afternoon: hike to the nearby cliffs for panoramic views over the highlands. Overnight in Dalaba.
Day 4: Doucki — Waterfall Paradise
Drive to Doucki, a remote village in the heart of Fouta Djallon and one of West Africa’s best-kept trekking secrets. Meet your local Fulani (Peulh) guide. Afternoon: short hike to the first waterfall — the Fouta Djallon is the source of the Niger, Senegal, and Gambia rivers, creating countless waterfalls. Swim in the natural pool. Overnight in Doucki village guesthouse.
Day 5: Doucki Full-Day Trek — Canyon & Waterfalls
Full-day trek through the Doucki Canyon. Hike along the edges of dramatic gorges, cross suspension bridges over rushing rivers, and discover hidden waterfalls. The Chutes de Doucki cascade through multiple levels of volcanic rock. Swim in each pool as you descend. Lunch picnic on the canyon rim. Spot monkeys, hornbills, and the rare Guinea turaco. The Fouta Djallon is one of West Africa’s most underrated natural wonders. Overnight in Doucki.
Day 6: Labe — The Fulani Capital
Drive to Labe (3 hours), the cultural capital of the Fouta Djallon and the heart of Fulani culture. Visit the Grande Mosquée de Labé with its distinctive minaret. Walk through the old town and its bustling market — Labe is famous for its woven indigo cloth and leatherwork. Afternoon: visit a Fulani village to learn about their semi-nomadic pastoralist traditions and the extraordinary social code of Pulaaku (Fulani way of life — modesty, patience, and wisdom). Overnight in Labe.
Day 7: Kambadaga Falls & Return to Kindia
Morning: visit the spectacular Kambadaga Falls, one of Fouta Djallon’s most impressive with a sheer drop of over 100 meters into a misty gorge. Afternoon: drive back toward Kindia through the scenic highlands. Overnight in Kindia.
Day 8: Îles de Los — Guinea’s Island Paradise
Return to Conakry. Boat trip to the Îles de Los, a small archipelago off Conakry’s coast. Visit Kassa Island and Roume Island with their pristine, largely empty beaches. Snorkeling and swimming in the Atlantic. Seafood lunch on the beach. This is Conakry’s weekend escape and a perfect way to end the Guinean adventure. Farewell dinner in Conakry. Overnight in Conakry.
Day 9: Depart Guinea
Morning at the artisanal center for Guinean crafts — indigo cloth, Fulani leatherwork, and carved masks. Transfer to airport.
