Day 1: Arrive in Tripoli — Medina, Red Castle & First Impressions

Arrive at Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport, where your guide welcomes you and transfers you to your hotel. After check-in and a traditional Libyan mint tea orientation, begin your exploration of Tripoli with a walking tour through the walled Medina. Enter through the Arch of Marcus Aurelius (163 AD) and explore the atmospheric souk with its spice merchants, silver jewelers, and textile workshops. Visit the Karamanli House, an 18th-century palace, and climb to the rooftop of the Red Castle Museum for panoramic views. At Martyrs’ Square, learn about Libya’s complex modern history as the sun sets over the Mediterranean. Welcome dinner at a traditional Libyan restaurant featuring the national dish — couscous with lamb and seven vegetables, and sharba (spiced Libyan soup). Overnight at your Tripoli hotel.

Day 2: Leptis Magna — The Emperor’s Rome in Africa

After an early breakfast, drive east along the Mediterranean coast to Leptis Magna (UNESCO), arguably the most completely preserved Roman city in the world. Born here in 145 AD, Emperor Septimius Severus transformed his hometown with imperial wealth, creating a metropolis of 100,000 people. Today, buried by desert sands for over a millennium, Leptis Magna emerges in astonishing condition: colonnaded streets, a 16,000-seat amphitheater, the Hadrianic Baths with their original mosaic floors and underfloor heating system, the monumental Severan Forum and Basilica with granite columns imported from Egypt, the old forum with Punic foundations, and the semicircular theater facing the Mediterranean. The almost total absence of other visitors makes the experience feel like a private archaeological discovery. Picnic lunch at the ruins. Day 3: Jebel Nafusa — Berber Mountains to the Sahara’s Edge

After breakfast, depart Tripoli southwest into the Jebel Nafusa mountains, the ancestral homeland of Libya’s indigenous Berber (Amazigh) people. The journey climbs from coastal plains through olive groves into a dramatically different landscape of rocky escarpments and ancient stone villages. Visit Qasr al-Haj, the magnificent 12th-century circular fortified granary with 114 chambers — a masterpiece of traditional Berber communal architecture and social organization. Continue to the abandoned stone village of Tarmeisa, perched on the escarpment edge with vast desert views. Day 4: Ghadames Old City — Paradise of the Sahara

Wake in the silence of the Sahara. After breakfast on the rooftop terrace overlooking the oasis palm groves, begin your full-day exploration of Ghadames (pronounced “Rhadames” in the local dialect), the legendary ‘Pearl of the Desert.’ Inhabited continuously for over 2,000 years, Ghadames was a critical stop on trans-Saharan trade caravans carrying gold, salt, slaves, and spices between Timbuktu and the Mediterranean. Its architecture is unique and brilliant: the entire old city is a single, interconnected structure of whitewashed mud-brick houses linked by 8 kilometers of covered alleyways that create a climate-controlled micro-city. The covered streets (known locally as ‘zinqa’) block the Sahara’s merciless sun while allowing the cool night air to circulate — a natural air-conditioning system that maintains temperatures 10-15°C cooler than outside. Above the streets, an entirely separate network of rooftop terraces formed the women’s domain, allowing them to move freely across the city for socializing, drying laundry, and enjoying the breeze while men used the covered streets below. Day 5: Ghadames Morning & Return to Tripoli

After a final breakfast in Ghadames, take a morning walk through the palm groves where an ancient irrigation system (falaj) still channels water from underground aquifers to nourish thousands of date palms, fig trees, and pomegranate orchards. Visit the Ain al-Faras (Spring of the Horse), the natural spring that has sustained Ghadames since its founding over two millennia ago. Mid-morning, begin the journey north back to Tripoli, with a stop in Nalut — another Jebel Nafusa mountain town famous for its qasr (fortified granary), one of the largest in Libya, dramatically silhouetted on a hilltop. Day 6: Farewell to Libya — Departure

Enjoy a relaxed final breakfast in Tripoli. Depending on your flight schedule, there is time for last-minute exploration: revisit the souk for souvenirs including handwoven Berber carpets, Tuareg silver work, pottery from Gharyan, and the region’s finest dates and olive oil. Your guide will transfer you to Mitiga International Airport in time for your departure flight. As you fly north over the Mediterranean, you carry memories of an ancient Saharan oasis, the world’s finest Roman ruins, Berber mountain villages unchanged for centuries, and the genuine warmth of Libyan hospitality.
