Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa & Fly to Mekele
Arrive Addis, connect to afternoon flight to Mekele. Briefing on the Danakil expedition ahead. Overnight in Mekele.
Day 2: Danakil — Salt Flats & Camel Caravans
Depart at dawn for the Danakil Depression. Drive through landscapes that feel like another planet. Arrive at Lake Afdera, a salt lake where you can float in the hyper-saline water. Continue to the salt flats where Afar workers still extract salt slabs by hand — ancient camel caravans still transport salt to the highlands. Overnight camping at Hamad Ela.
Day 3: Dallol — The Alien Landscape
Dawn at Dallol. This is the hottest inhabited place on Earth (average annual temperature of 34.4°C / 94°F). The landscape is surreal — bubbling sulfur springs, neon-colored mineral formations, acidic pools of vivid green and yellow, and salt formations shaped like cauliflowers. The Afar people have lived here for millennia. Afternoon visit to the salt canyons. Overnight at Hamad Ela.
Day 4: Erta Ale Volcano
Drive to Erta Ale base camp. Begin the 3-4 hour hike to the summit in the late afternoon (cooler). Arrive at the crater rim at night. The sight of the glowing lava lake, churning and spitting, is one of the most primal experiences on Earth. Only a handful of volcanoes worldwide have permanent lava lakes. Overnight on the crater rim (basic sleeping mats).
Day 5: Dawn at the Lava Lake & Return
Wake before dawn — the lava lake is most dramatic in the pre-dawn dark. Watch the sunrise paint the surrounding volcanic landscape. Descend and drive back to Mekele. Hot shower, cold beer, and a sense of having been to the ends of the Earth. Overnight in Mekele.
Day 6: Mekele to Addis & Depart
Morning flight to Addis. Afternoon at the Ethnological Museum. Transfer to airport.
