Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Kinshasa — Heart of Africa
Arrive at N’djili International Airport in Kinshasa, one of Africa’s largest cities (17 million people) and the world’s largest French-speaking city. Across the Congo River sits Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) — the two closest capital cities on Earth. Transfer to your hotel in Gombe, the diplomatic and business district. Overnight in Kinshasa.
Day 2: Kinshasa City Tour — History & Chaos
Full day exploring Kinshasa. Morning: visit the National Museum of DRC (inaugurated 2019, a gift from South Korea) with its extraordinary collection of Congolese art, masks, and cultural artifacts. Visit the Marché Central — one of Africa’s largest markets, a sensory explosion of color, sound, and smell. Afternoon: see the monumental Laurent-Désiré Kabila Mausoleum. Visit the Académie des Beaux-Arts, where Congo’s vibrant contemporary art scene is on display. Cross Boulevard du 30 Juin, Kinshasa’s main artery, to the banks of the mighty Congo River — the deepest river in the world. Overnight in Kinshasa.
Day 3: Congo River & Bonobos
Morning boat trip on the Congo River. Visit Lola ya Bonobo, the world’s only bonobo sanctuary — located just outside Kinshasa. Bonobos are our closest living relatives alongside chimpanzees, found only in the DRC, and are endangered. Watch orphaned bonobos being rehabilitated in a 30-hectare forest reserve. Afternoon: visit Kinkole fishing port and sample fresh-caught capitaine (Nile perch) at a riverside restaurant. Overnight in Kinshasa.
Day 4: Sapeurs — The Congo Dandy Culture
Morning with the Sapeurs — the Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes. The sapeurs of Kinshasa and Brazzaville are legendary: men who spend their savings on designer suits and accessories, treating fashion as an art form and a political statement of dignity in the face of poverty. Meet sapeurs in their neighborhood, learn about the philosophy of sape, and attend a sapeur gathering. Afternoon: visit a local fashion designer. Evening: dinner and live Congolese rumba — the music of the Congo, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Overnight in Kinshasa.
Day 5: Zongo Falls — Congo’s Eden
Early departure for Zongo Falls (2.5 hours from Kinshasa). These 65-meter falls on the Inkisi River are a spectacular sight — the water thunders into a deep gorge surrounded by lush tropical forest. Swim in the natural pools, hike to different viewpoints, and feel the spray from the waterfall. Picnic lunch. Return to Kinshasa in the evening. Overnight in Kinshasa.
Day 6: Brazzaville Day Trip — Two Capitals
Cross the Congo River by speedboat to Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) — a rare opportunity to visit two capital cities in one trip. Tour Brazzaville’s highlights: the Basilique Sainte-Anne with its stunning green-tiled roof, the Nabemba Tower, and the Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza Memorial. Afternoon return to Kinshasa. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Kinshasa.
Day 7: Depart Kinshasa
