Day 1: Arrive Bangui — Welcome to CAR

Arrive in Bangui. Afternoon briefing about your forest immersion experience. The Lobaye Forest, 100km southwest of Bangui, is one of the Congo Basin’s most accessible rainforest areas and home to the BaAka, one of Africa’s last forest hunter-gatherer peoples. Overnight in Bangui.

Day 2: Enter the Lobaye Rainforest

Drive 2.5 hours to the Lobaye Forest. Meet your BaAka hosts and guides — people whose ancestors have lived in this forest for millennia, whose language contains 15 different words for “honey,” and whose knowledge of forest ecology is encoded in songs and stories. Set up base camp. Afternoon: first forest walk — the BaAka demonstrate how they identify edible mushrooms, locate wild yam tubers by the shape of their vines, and read animal tracks in the leaf litter. Every plant has a name, a use, and often a story. Evening around the campfire: BaAka singing. The complex polyphonic harmonies, passed down orally for generations, are unlike anything in Western music — and UNESCO has recognized them as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Overnight in forest camp (tent/hammock).

Day 3: Hunter-Gatherer Life — Net Hunting & Gathering

Dawn departure for a traditional net-hunting demonstration. The BaAka set up woven nets (up to 30m long) across a forest section, then the women and children drive game toward the nets while hunters wait. After the demonstration, learn to make cord from liana bark and weave a small section of hunting net yourself. Afternoon: forest gathering — collect mushrooms, wild greens, termites (a protein source), and wild honey if a hive is located. Learn the BaAka method of smoking bees out of a hive and harvesting honeycomb without protective gear. Evening: cook your gathered foods with the community. Overnight in forest camp.

Day 4: Medicinal Plants & Ceremonial Music

Morning: medicinal plant walk. The BaAka identify plants for treating malaria, stomach ailments, snake bites, wounds, and infections — knowledge accumulated over thousands of years. Afternoon: music workshop. BaAka music uses water drums (playing drums partially submerged in a river changes the pitch), the geedal (a single-string bow instrument played with the mouth as resonator), and the mobeke (hunting whistle). Participate in a full musical ceremony. Farewell evening with the community. Overnight in forest camp.

Day 5: Return to Bangui & Depart

Morning farewell to the BaAka community. Drive back to Bangui. Visit the central market for last souvenirs — traditional BaAka baskets, carvings, and textiles. Transfer to airport.
