Day 1: Arrive Bujumbura
Welcome at Bujumbura International Airport. Transfer to your hotel overlooking Lake Tanganyika. Afternoon: walking tour of Bujumbura’s colonial Art Deco center — the Central Post Office, Independence Square, and the Cathedral. Visit the Central Market where traders sell everything from fresh fish to Burundian coffee. Evening: sunset over Lake Tanganyika. Welcome dinner featuring mukeke, the delicious fish found only in this ancient lake. Overnight in Bujumbura.
Day 2: Gishora Drum Sanctuary — The Heartbeat of Burundi
Morning drive through Burundi’s stunning hill country to Gishora. The landscape of Burundi — countless green hills, tea plantations, and winding roads with panoramic views — is genuinely breathtaking. Arrive at the Gishora Drum Sanctuary, one of East Africa’s most important cultural sites. The ritual drums of Burundi are UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the performance here is extraordinary — drummers in traditional dress, leaping and spinning while maintaining impossibly complex rhythms on massive drums carved from single tree trunks. The drums have names (Ruciteme and Murimirwa are the most famous), histories, and sacred significance dating back to the Burundian monarchy. After the performance, tour the sanctuary and learn about the role of the Abatimbo (royal drummers). Lunch in Gitega. Afternoon: visit the National Museum of Burundi for deeper cultural context. Overnight in Gitega.
Day 3: Karera Waterfalls & Rutana
Morning journey to Karera Falls — a spectacular five-tier waterfall where you can swim in natural pools between the cascades. The setting is lush tropical vegetation, and the sound of falling water fills the valley. Picnic lunch. Continue to the Nyakazu Fault (German Gorge) for dramatic views over the Rift Valley escarpment — on clear days you can see into Tanzania. Visit Rutovu, the source of the Nile’s southernmost tributary, marked by a stone pyramid. Return to Bujumbura through the tea-growing highlands. Overnight in Bujumbura.
Day 4: Rusizi National Park & Lake Tanganyika
Morning boat cruise in Rusizi National Park. The Rusizi River delta where it meets Lake Tanganyika is a wildlife-rich wetland: hippos surface with explosive snorts, massive Nile crocodiles bask on sandbanks, and the birdlife is spectacular — fish eagles, malachite kingfishers, and with luck, the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork. Walk along the nature trails. Afternoon: visit the Livingstone-Stanley Monument, the rock where the famous meeting supposedly occurred. Free time at Saga Beach on Lake Tanganyika — swim in the crystal-clear freshwater lake (no crocodiles near the beaches). Evening: farewell dinner at a lakeside restaurant, watching the fishermen’s lanterns flicker across the dark water. Overnight in Bujumbura.
Day 5: Departure
Final morning at leisure — shop for Burundian coffee, woven baskets, and miniature drums at the Central Market. Transfer to the airport for departure.
