Itinerary
Day 1: Nouakchott → Atar → Chinguetti
Early morning departure from Nouakchott. Drive through Mauritania’s dramatic changing landscapes — from Atlantic coastal plains to the Saharan desert. Stop at Atar for lunch and a taste of desert town life — the market, the tea houses, the constant flow of nomads and traders. Continue through the trackless desert to Chinguetti, arriving in the late afternoon. First glimpse of the ancient stone city emerging from the dunes is unforgettable. Evening walk through the sand-filled streets. Visit a family library to see illuminated manuscripts dating back to the 9th century. Overnight in Chinguetti guesthouse.
Day 2: Chinguetti — Camels, Dunes & Ancient Knowledge
Dawn over the dunes — climb to a high point for the sunrise panorama. After breakfast, explore Chinguetti’s ancient mosque (13th century) and its distinctive square minaret. Visit additional family libraries — each collection of manuscripts tells a different story of the city’s history as a center of Islamic learning and trans-Saharan trade. Late morning: mount your camel and trek into the dunes with a nomadic guide. Learn how the Saharan nomads navigate by stars, read the shapes of dunes, and find water in the desert. Your guide will prepare mint tea over a small fire — the famous Mauritanian ceremony of three successive glasses, each sweeter than the last. Picnic lunch in the shade of a desert acacia. Continue trekking through the afternoon as the sand changes color with the moving sun. Camp overnight under the stars — the Sahara night sky, free of all light pollution, is one of the world’s great spectacles.
Day 3: Sahara Sunrise → Nouakchott → Departure
Wake before dawn to watch the sunrise from the dunes — the Sahara at its most sublime. After camp breakfast prepared by your guide, camel ride back to Chinguetti. Begin the drive back to Nouakchott, with the desert’s images and silence staying with you. Arrive in the capital for transfer to the airport.
