Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Bujumbura → Gishora Drum Sanctuary
Arrive at Bujumbura International Airport. Meet your guide and drive immediately into the interior through Burundi’s spectacular hill country — a landscape of endless green hills, tea plantations, and panoramic Rift Valley views. Arrive at the Gishora Drum Sanctuary for the afternoon drum performance. This is not simply a show — it’s a window into the soul of Burundian culture. The ritual drumming, performed on massive drums carved from single tree trunks, tells the history of the Burundian monarchy. The drummers leap, spin, and exchange positions while maintaining intricate polyrhythms — a performance so powerful it has been recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. After the performance, meet the drummers and learn about the sacred traditions. Evening: drive to Gitega for dinner and overnight at a quality hotel.
Day 2: Gitega → Karera Falls → Bujumbura
Morning visit to the National Museum of Burundi in Gitega — an excellent introduction to the country’s pre-colonial kingdoms, colonial period, and independence. See royal regalia, traditional musical instruments, and archaeological artifacts. Continue to the breathtaking Karera Waterfalls — five tiers of falling water surrounded by tropical vegetation. Swim in the natural pools and enjoy a picnic lunch with the sound of cascading water. Afternoon: drive back to Bujumbura through the tea-growing highlands — the views are spectacular. Arrive in the capital by late afternoon. Evening: sunset dinner on the shores of Lake Tanganyika at a lakeside restaurant. Watch the fishing boats’ lanterns appear as darkness falls — hundreds of tiny lights reflecting on the vast lake. Overnight in Bujumbura.
Day 3: Rusizi National Park → Departure
Morning boat cruise in Rusizi National Park at the northern tip of Lake Tanganyika. The wetland where the Rusizi River meets the lake is a wildlife haven: pods of hippos, massive crocodiles, and spectacular birdlife including African fish eagles and malachite kingfishers. The sitatunga antelope — adapted for wetland living with splayed hooves — can sometimes be spotted among the papyrus. Visit the Livingstone-Stanley Monument for your “I presume?” moment. Afternoon: transfer to Bujumbura International Airport for departure. You leave having experienced one of Africa’s most rewarding and least-visited destinations.
