Journey Overview

Day 1: Arrive Punta Arenas, Chile

Arrive in Punta Arenas, the capital of Chilean Patagonia on the Strait of Magellan. The city’s history is inextricably linked to Antarctic exploration — it was the last port for Shackleton, Amundsen, and Scott. Welcome dinner and expedition briefing. Overnight in Punta Arenas.

Day 2: Fly to Antarctica — The Two-Hour Miracle

The flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island (South Shetland Islands) takes just 2 hours — the same Drake Passage crossing that would take 2 days by ship. This BAE-146 aircraft is specially modified for gravel runway landings. The approach to King George Island’s Frei Station runway reveals a landscape of ice caps, glaciers, and the distant white expanse of the Antarctic Peninsula. Disembark onto Antarctic soil at the Chilean Frei Base (the only Antarctic “village” — with a post office, bank, school, and the Russian Bellingshausen Station next door, complete with the world’s southernmost Orthodox church, Trinity Church, built of Siberian cedar). Zodiac transfer to your expedition vessel waiting in Maxwell Bay. Settle into your cabin as the ship departs toward the Peninsula — you are already in Antarctica, having bypassed 4 days of Drake Passage sailing.

Days 3-6: Antarctic Peninsula Immersion

Four full days of shore landings and Zodiac cruising — the same sites as the Classic voyage but with a higher ratio of time ashore to time at sea. The air-cruise model allows smaller ships to operate the same itinerary, meaning passenger counts of 68-132 rather than 150-200 — faster landings, more intimate experiences, and access to sites larger ships cannot enter. Visit penguin colonies, Zodiac among icebergs, kayak, and potentially camp on the ice (optional). The compressed schedule means potentially 8 shore landings in 4 days — an intensity of Antarctic experience unmatched by traditional voyages.

Day 7: Fly Back to Punta Arenas

Final morning in Antarctica. Zodiac to King George Island, board the aircraft, and fly back to Punta Arenas — watching the White Continent recede through your window. Farewell dinner celebrating your Antarctic achievement. Overnight in Punta Arenas.

Day 8: Departure

Transfer to Punta Arenas airport for flights home. Option to extend in Patagonia — Torres del Paine National Park is just 4 hours away.
