11-Day Antarctica Classic Expedition: Ushuaia to the White Continent

Day 1: Ushuaia — End of the World

Arrive in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, nestled between the Martial Mountains and the Beagle Channel. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon at leisure to explore this frontier town: visit the Museo Marítimo in the former prison, walk the waterfront, or sample Patagonian lamb at a parrilla. Evening welcome briefing with your expedition team. Overnight Ushuaia.

Day 2: Embarkation — Setting Sail

Morning free to explore Tierra del Fuego National Park (optional). Afternoon transfer to the port to board your expedition vessel—the 134-passenger G Expedition or similar ice-strengthened ship. Meet your expedition team of naturalists, marine biologists, and photographers. Settle into your cabin as the ship casts off from Ushuaia, sails past the lighthouse at the end of the world, and enters the Beagle Channel. Evening welcome dinner as the lights of civilization fade astern. Overnight at sea.

Days 3-4: The Drake Passage — Seabird Alley

Two days crossing the legendary Drake Passage, the 800-kilometer stretch of water between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands. Join the expedition team on the outer decks to spot wandering albatross—with wingspans exceeding 3.5 meters—soaring effortlessly alongside the ship. Cape petrels, southern fulmars, and the occasional whale accompany the crossing. Attend onboard lectures: Antarctic geology, penguin biology, the history of polar exploration (from Shackleton to the present), and photography workshops. The first icebergs appear on the horizon. Excitement builds as you cross the Antarctic Convergence—the biological boundary where cold Antarctic waters meet warmer sub-Antarctic seas, marked by a dramatic drop in temperature and an explosion of marine life.

Days 5-8: Antarctic Peninsula — The White Continent

Four full days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. The expedition’s flexible itinerary follows the best possible wildlife and weather conditions. Each day brings two Zodiac excursions—morning and afternoon—landing on the continent and surrounding islands.

Possible landings and activities include:

Penguin colonies: Walk among thousands of gentoo and chinstrap penguins at Neko Harbour, Paradise Bay, or Cuverville Island. Watch the chicks being fed, the adults porpoising through the water, and the skuas patrolling overhead.

Zodiac cruising: Navigate through a maze of icebergs sculpted into impossible shapes—arches, caves, and spires—in shades of blue you never knew existed. The sound of ice popping and cracking is the only soundtrack.

Whale watching: Humpback whales are common in February and March, often approaching Zodiacs curiously. Minke whales and orcas are also regularly sighted.

Deception Island: Sail through Neptune’s Bellows into the flooded caldera of an active volcano. Walk among the rusting remains of a whaling station and, if you’re brave, take the ‘Polar Plunge’ in thermally heated waters.

Scientific stations: Visit a working research station (conditions permitting) to meet scientists studying climate change, krill populations, and penguin ecology.

Each evening, the expedition team presents recaps of the day’s wildlife sightings and previews tomorrow’s plan. Overnight at anchor or at sea in Antarctic waters (4 nights).

Days 9-10: Drake Passage — The Return

Begin the crossing back to South America. The lectures continue: seal biology, krill ecology, and the Antarctic Treaty that protects this continent for peace and science. Reflect on the experience with your fellow explorers over meals in the dining room. Keep watch for wildlife a final time as albatross glide past. Approach Cape Horn and enter the shelter of the Beagle Channel. Farewell dinner and crew appreciation. Overnight at sea.

Day 11: Disembark Ushuaia

Early morning arrival in Ushuaia. Disembark after breakfast. Transfer to the airport or continue your exploration of Patagonia.
