Day 1: Montevideo — Uruguay’s Capital
Arrive in Montevideo, the relaxed riverside capital of Uruguay. Explore the Ciudad Vieja (Old City) with its colonial architecture, the Mercado del Puerto for authentic parrilla (grilled meat), and the Rambla waterfront promenade. Evening welcome briefing with your expedition team. Overnight Montevideo.
Day 2: Embarkation
Morning at leisure—perhaps visit a local winery (Uruguay’s Tannat is world-class). Afternoon transfer to the port to board your expedition ship. Settle into your cabin. Sail from Montevideo into the vastness of the South Atlantic. Welcome dinner. Overnight at sea.
Days 3-5: South Atlantic Crossing
Three days at sea sailing toward the Falkland Islands. This extended transit allows for a comprehensive lecture program: Falklands history and the 1982 conflict, seabird identification (albatross, petrels, shearwaters), penguin biology, and photography workshops. The ship’s library and observation lounges become your world. Spot the first wildlife: dolphins riding the bow wave, wandering albatross gliding effortlessly in the ship’s wake. Overnight at sea.
Days 6-8: Falkland Islands — Outer Island Explorer (3 days)
Unlike shorter itineraries, this voyage dedicates three full days to the Falklands—enough time to visit both the remote outer islands and the capital.
Day 6: Land at West Point Island or Carcass Island in the remote western archipelago. Walk through tussock grass to rockhopper penguin rookeries where these punk-crested characters navigate near-vertical cliffs with astonishing agility. Black-browed albatross colonies nest on the clifftops—watch their elaborate courtship dances.
Day 7: Saunders Island or Volunteer Point (conditions permitting)—home to the Falklands’ largest king penguin colony outside South Georgia. Also provides gentoo and Magellanic penguin rookeries. The beach at The Neck is among the most beautiful in the South Atlantic.
Day 8: Port Stanley. Walk the colorful waterfront, visit the museum and war memorials. This is your last chance for civilization before two weeks in the wilderness. Overnight at sea sailing toward South Georgia.
Days 9-10: Scotia Sea
Two days crossing toward South Georgia. The first icebergs appear. Lectures intensify: Shackleton’s epic journey, South Georgia’s history (whaling, sealing, the remarkable rat eradication program), and the extraordinary recovery of its wildlife. Overnight at sea.
Days 11-14: South Georgia — King Penguin Kingdoms (4 days)
Four days exploring South Georgia, including:
– Grytviken whaling station, Shackleton’s grave, and the excellent South Georgia Museum
– St. Andrews Bay’s 200,000 king penguins
– Gold Harbour’s king penguins and elephant seals
– Fortuna Bay and the optional Shackleton Walk to Stromness
– Cooper Bay for macaroni penguins via Zodiac
Each day offers two landings or Zodiac cruises. Overnight in South Georgia waters.
Days 15-16: Scotia Sea South
Two days sailing south toward the Antarctic Peninsula. More icebergs, more wildlife, more lectures. Overnight at sea.
Days 17-19: Antarctic Peninsula (3 days)
Three days of Peninsula exploration: Deception Island, Half Moon Island, Neko Harbour, the Lemaire Channel. Twice-daily Zodiac excursions among penguin colonies, icebergs, and whales.
Days 20-21: Drake Passage
Cross back to South America. Final lectures, photo sharing, farewell dinner.
Day 22: Disembark Ushuaia
Arrive Ushuaia. Disembark after breakfast. Transfer to airport.
