Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Pingyao — Wall & Walk
Arrive at Pingyao — the best preserved ancient walled city in China (UNESCO). Driver will pick you up from Taiyuan or Lishi. Walk the Ming Dynasty city wall (1370 AD, 12km circumference, 12m high, 6m wide). The wall has 72 watchtowers, 1,000+ battlements and is the most extensive medieval city wall in China still intact. Walk Qingming Lane (South Street), a Qing-era commercial street. Visit the Ri Shengchang Livery Store (1823) — China’s first bank — to see the original wooden vaults and the most advanced ledger-keeping system of its era. Overnight in Pingyao.
Day 2: Wang’s Family Compound & Yellow River
Morning at the Wang’s Family Compound (the largest family mansion in China, 1,318 rooms, 1762-1816 AD). The Wangs were Shanxi merchant bankers and a careful study of Qing-era architecture. Continue to Zhangbi Ancient Castle (6km²), a unique subterranean castle built for the Ming-Qing era military — with a 2,500-meter underground tunnel system. Afternoon: drive 4 hours to the Hukou Waterfall (壶口瀑布) on the Yellow River — China’s most celebrated waterfall. The Yellow River thunders through a 50-meter-wide gorge, creating a thunderous 50-meter cascading waterfall that flows into a 2-kilometer-long rainstorm mist. Stay overnight in Linfen. Overnight in Linfen.
Day 3: Hukou Waterfall & Depart
Morning: drive back to the Hukou Waterfall for the second view. Cross the Yellow River Bridge to see from the Shanxi side. Optional flight in a yellow river-side helicopter. Drive 4 hours to Taiyuan. Visit the Jinci Temple on the way — the oldest extant temple in Shanxi (built 1,400 BC, before the Western Zhou Dynasty), famous for its “Nanlao Spring” and the 48 cast-iron figures. Transfer to Taiyuan airport or bullet train to Beijing.
