Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Qufu — Temple of Confucius
Begin at the birthplace of Confucian philosophy. Visit the Temple of Confucius (Kong Miao), originally built in 478 BC just one year after Confucius’s death and expanded over 2,500 years into a vast 130-hectare complex with 466 buildings — the only major Confucian site preserving a complete Ming-era layout. Walk the ancient cypress corridors (Cypress of Confucius is 2,400+ years old). Continue to the Temple of the Duke of Zhou next door. Afternoon visit the Kong Family Mansion (Kong Fu), the ancestral home of Confucius’s direct descendants, who held the hereditary title of “First Duke of the Empire” for 2,500 years. Walk the central axis through 152 buildings. Overnight in Qufu.
Day 2: Qufu → Mount Tai — Confucian Mountain Connection
Morning visit to the Confucius Cemetery (Kong Lin), a 110-hectare forest where Confucius and 100,000+ descendants are buried among 10,000+ trees — including pines planted by Chinese emperors. Drive to Mount Tai (1.5 hours), China’s most sacred mountain. Begin hiking from the Red Gate (Hongmen). The route traces the same path 72 emperors walked over 2,000 years. View ancient inscriptions: the Han Dynasty “Recapturing a Sun” carving (98 AD), Tang calligraphy, and Song Dynasty imperial monuments. Reach the summit for sunset. Overnight at the Mount Tai summit hotel.
Day 3: Mount Tai Sunrise & Depart
Pre-dawn: rise for the legendary Mount Tai sunrise — the unbroken horizon over the Yellow Sea. After sunrise, descend and visit the Dai Temple (Dai Miao). The temple is dedicated to the Mountain God of Mount Tai, and its 96,500 sqm complex (built in 1536 AD) contains one of China’s largest preserved ancient architectural ensembles. Walk the ancient courtyard where the Tang Dynasty emperor Xuanzong inscribed his cosmic order. Lunch. Drive to Jinan/Yanzhou station for onward travel.
