Overview
Step into a lost world at Danum Valley Conservation Area, a 438-square-kilometer expanse of virgin lowland dipterocarp rainforest that has remained untouched for millions of years. Home to an extraordinary density of wildlife — including all 10 species of Bornean primates — Danum Valley offers one of the most authentic rainforest experiences on Earth. Stay at the luxurious Borneo Rainforest Lodge, nestled on the banks of the Danum River, with floor-to-ceiling windows bringing the jungle right to your doorstep.
Day 1: Lahad Datu — Danum Valley — Afternoon Jungle Walk
Pick up from Lahad Datu Airport or your hotel and transfer approximately 2.5 hours into the heart of the Danum Valley Conservation Area. Upon arrival at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, enjoy a welcome drink and orientation briefing. Check into your Jungle Chalet, a beautifully appointed room with private balcony overlooking the rainforest. After lunch, set out on a guided afternoon jungle walk along the nature trails surrounding the lodge. Your naturalist guide will introduce you to the forest’s incredible biodiversity — towering dipterocarp trees, medicinal plants used by indigenous communities, and perhaps early sightings of red leaf monkeys or giant hornbills. Evening dinner at the lodge, followed by an optional night drive or night walk to spot nocturnal wildlife including civets, slow lorises, and flying squirrels. (Lunch, Dinner)
Day 2: Canopy Walkway — Waterfall Trek — Night Safari
After an early breakfast, ascend the lodge’s famous canopy walkway, suspended 27 meters above the forest floor. From this elevated vantage point, observe the rainforest’s multiple layers and spot birds, squirrels, and if extremely fortunate, wild orangutans moving through the canopy. After exploring the walkway, trek to the nearby waterfall and natural pool — a refreshing swimming spot deep in the jungle. After lunch, choose between a guided trek to ancient Kadazandusun burial sites (Coffin Cliff) with panoramic views, or a gentler walk along the river trail. Evening: embark on a night drive in an open-top vehicle along the access road — the best opportunity to spot nocturnal mammals including the elusive clouded leopard, Malay civet, and various owl species. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Day 3: Sunrise Walk — Departure
Optional early morning birdwatching walk to catch the dawn chorus of Danum Valley’s 300+ bird species. After breakfast, enjoy a final guided nature walk before checking out at 11:00 AM. Transfer back to Lahad Datu Airport or your hotel, arriving early afternoon. (Breakfast)
