Day 1: Arrive Tunis — Kairouan & Tozeur (380 km)
Arrive at Tunis-Carthage International Airport. Meet your guide and drive directly south into Tunisia’s interior. First stop: Kairouan, Islam’s fourth holiest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Great Mosque of Uqba Bin Nafi — its forest of ancient Roman and Byzantine columns, vast marble-paved courtyard, and the oldest standing minaret in the Islamic world (built 730 AD). See the Aghlabid Basins — 9th-century open-air reservoirs that stored water for the holy city, an engineering marvel. Continue south through Tunisia’s transforming landscape: olive groves fade to steppe, steppe to desert, date palms announcing our approach to the Sahara. Arrive Tozeur — a desert oasis city with 400,000 palm trees and unique geometric brick architecture. Evening walk through Tozeur’s Old Medina with its distinctive facades. Overnight Tozeur.
Day 2: Mountain Oases — Chebika, Tamerza & Mides (150 km)
Full day 4×4 excursion into Tunisia’s dramatic mountain oasis country along the Algerian border. First: Chebika — a spring-fed waterfall cascading into a narrow canyon lined with palm trees. Walk the abandoned old village clinging to ochre cliffs, then cool your feet in the crystal-clear water. This oasis was used as a film location for The English Patient. Next: Tamerza — perched on the edge of a vast canyon with panoramic views stretching to the Chott salt lake and distant dunes. See Tamerza’s waterfall and the abandoned old village. Final stop: Mides — the most dramatic of the oases, overlooking a deep, high-walled canyon marking the Algerian border. The canyon walls plunge 100 meters; at their base, an impossibly green palm grove. Return to Tozeur for lunch. Afternoon: visit Tozeur’s palm grove, one of the most beautiful in the Sahara — 400,000 date palms producing the prized Deglet Nour (“Fingers of Light”) dates. Explore Dar Cherait Museum, a lavish recreation of a traditional Tunisian palace with art, costumes, and historical exhibits. Evening: folklore show at Sahara Lounge with traditional music and dance under the desert stars (minimum group size applies). Overnight Tozeur.
Day 3: Star Wars Landscapes & Chott El Jerid Salt Lake (250 km)
Morning: 4×4 excursion to Ong Jmel (“Camel Head” in Arabic) — the iconic Star Wars filming location where Episode I: The Phantom Menace was shot. The sandstone formation perfectly resembles a camel’s head and hump rising from the desert. Visit the abandoned Mos Espa movie set — the fictional spaceport on Tatooine where young Anakin Skywalker lived. Wander through the set’s domed buildings and imagine pod racers zipping through the desert. Continue to Nefta — the Sufi holy city overlooking a vast oasis and the La Corbeille (“The Basket”), a dramatic geological depression filled with palm trees. Afternoon: cross the magnificent Chott El Jerid — North Africa’s largest salt lake. This 5,000-square-kilometer expanse of crystallized salt stretches to the horizon, a blinding white landscape where summer mirages dance and where, legend says, entire armies disappeared forever. Photo stops to capture the otherworldly beauty. Arrive in Douz — the legendary “Gateway to the Sahara.” In late afternoon, mount your camel and trek into the golden dunes. The sunset transforms the sand into amber and rose as the Sahara’s profound silence envelops you. Continue to your desert camp, where Berber tents with comfortable bedding await. Evening: tagine dinner cooked in the sand, Berber drumming around the campfire, and the Sahara sky — the Milky Way arcing across the heavens like spilled diamonds. Overnight desert camp.
Day 4: Sahara Sunrise & Matmata Underground Village (250 km)
Wake before dawn. Climb the highest dune to watch the Sahara sunrise — the first light painting the dunes gold, the silence absolute, the moment unforgettable. After breakfast at camp, depart for Matmata. En route, the landscape transitions from desert to the lunar-like plateaus of southern Tunisia. Arrive at Matmata — a landscape of crater-like depressions where Berber communities have carved their homes deep underground for centuries. These troglodyte dwellings feature central courtyards open to the sky, connected to cave-rooms burrowed into the earth. The architecture is perfectly adapted to the desert climate: warm in winter, cool in summer. Visit a traditional troglodyte home and share tea with a Berber family — taste their olive oil, homemade bread baked in earth ovens, and honey. Visit the Hotel Sidi Driss — the iconic Star Wars filming location that served as the interior of Luke Skywalker’s childhood home on Tatooine. Continue to Toujane — an ancient Berber village clinging to a mountainside, famous for handmade “margoum” carpets and rosemary honey. Overnight Matmata (semi-troglodyte hotel).
Day 5: Matmata to El Jem & Sousse (350 km)
Morning drive north through Tunisia’s interior. Arrive at El Jem — the magnificent Roman Colosseum rising from the flat plains like a mirage. Built around 238 AD, this UNESCO World Heritage Site seated 35,000 spectators and is the third-largest Roman amphitheater ever built and the best-preserved in Africa. Visit Dar Am Taieb — a contemporary art house in a restored medina mansion showcasing modern Tunisian artists. Drive to Hammamet — Tunisia’s most charming coastal town. Explore Hammamet’s Old Medina: the 15th-century fort where waves crash against ancient ramparts, narrow streets with whitewashed houses and blue doors, jasmine-draped walls, art galleries, and boutiques.
