Day 2: Djerba Island Discovery — Synagogues, Souks & Pottery
Full day exploring Djerba — North Africa’s largest island, connected to the mainland by a Roman-era causeway. Morning: visit the El Ghriba Synagogue — one of the oldest synagogues in the world, dating back to the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem (586 BC). The interior is breathtaking: blue tilework, silver lamps, intricately carved wooden Torah arks, and the “Stone of Jerusalem” — a relic said to have been brought by the first Jewish settlers fleeing Babylonian destruction. Continue to Ksar Ouled Soltane — the most spectacular and best-preserved ksar in southern Tunisia. This multi-story fortified granary, with its honeycomb of ghorfas (vaulted storage rooms) stacked four levels high around a central courtyard, was used by Berber tribes to store grain, olive oil, and valuables. It served as the slave quarters of Mos Espa in Star Wars: Episode I. Next: Chenini — a stunning Berber village carved into a mountainside. Whitewashed homes blend into the rock face, crowned by a white mosque at the summit. Walk with a local guide who shares the history of his village and traditions — the Chenini Berbers speak their own Amazigh dialect and maintain centuries-old customs. Continue to Ksar Ghilane — a remote desert oasis famous for its natural hot spring. Crystal-clear thermal water (30C/86F year-round) bubbles up from deep underground, creating a pool surrounded by palm trees at the edge of the Sahara dunes. Swim in the warm water as the desert breeze rustles the palm fronds. Lunch at the oasis. Afternoon: options — camel trek to the ruins of the Roman fort Tisavar, a frontier outpost deep in the Sahara, or a quad bike excursion across the dunes. Late afternoon: journey deeper into the desert to Zmela camp — a traditional Berber camp set among the dunes, with no electricity, no light pollution, and nothing but sand and sky. Watch the sunset paint the dunes gold and crimson. Dinner cooked over an open fire. Saharan vigil: Berber music, storytelling, and the most spectacular night sky you will ever see — the Milky Way blazing overhead, shooting stars streaking across the darkness every few minutes. Day 5: Douz, Chott El Jerid & Tozeur Oasis (280 km)
Sahara sunrise: climb the dunes for the dawn spectacle. After breakfast, drive to Douz — the “Gateway to the Sahara,” where trans-Saharan caravans once assembled before crossing the great desert. Free time to explore Douz’s colorful market and the small Sahara Museum. Continue across the Chott El Jerid — North Africa’s largest salt lake. This blinding white expanse of crystallized salt creates surreal mirages — phantom lakes and shimmering cities hovering on the horizon. Arrive in Tozeur — the oasis city of 400,000 palm trees and unique geometric brick architecture. Visit Tozeur’s Old Medina with its distinctive brick patterns (the “Tozeur style”) found nowhere else. Evening: optional carriage ride through the magnificent palm grove or visit Dar Cherait Museum. Overnight Tozeur 4-star hotel.
Day 6: Mountain Oases, Star Wars & Ong Jmel (150 km)

Day 7: Matmata Underground & Return to Djerba (250 km)
Morning drive to Matmata via the Berber village of Tamazret. Stop for a coffee break in Tamazret perched on a ridge with desert views. Arrive in Matmata — the crater-like landscape of underground Berber troglodyte homes. Visit a local family’s underground dwelling — share tea, taste their homemade bread with olive oil and honey, experience daily Berber life. Visit the Hotel Sidi Driss — the iconic Star Wars filming location. After lunch, drive via Toujane (Berber carpet village) back to Djerba. Evening: visit the Djerbahood street art project — the village of Erriadh transformed into an open-air gallery with murals by 150+ international street artists on its whitewashed walls. Day 8: Departure from Djerba
Free morning for a final swim in the Mediterranean, last souvenir shopping (Djerbian silver jewelry, pottery from Guellala, dates, olive oil), or simply relaxing on the beach.
