5-Day Benin Highlights: Ganvie, Ouidah & Dahomey Heritage

Day 1: Arrive Cotonou — Ganvie Stilt Village

Arrive Cotonou. Morning transfer directly to Abomey-Calavi for the pirogue to Ganvie. Cruise across Lake Nokoué to Africa’s largest stilt village — 37,000 people living on water since the 16th century. Glide through the canal-streets, visit the floating market, and learn the incredible history of the Tofinu people who fled slave raiders by building a city where enemies could not follow. Lunch on the lake. Afternoon return to Cotonou. Overnight Cotonou.

Day 2: Ouidah — Voodoo & Slave Route

Full day in Ouidah. Morning: Sacred Forest of Kpassè (voodoo deity statues), Python Temple (handle a sacred python), and the History Museum in the Portuguese Fort. Afternoon: walk the 4km Slave Route from the auction square to the Point of No Return — the monumental arch on the beach where an estimated 1 million enslaved people boarded ships. The memorials along the route (the Tree of Forgetfulness, the Zomai Enclosure) are deeply moving. Evening return to Cotonou. Overnight Cotonou.

Day 3: Abomey — UNESCO Royal Palaces

Morning drive to Abomey (3 hours). Full afternoon at the UNESCO-listed Royal Palaces of Abomey — 12 successive kings’ palaces built over 300 years, with extraordinary bas-reliefs and the throne rooms of the Dahomey Kingdom. The Dahomey Amazons (all-female military regiment) story is told in the museum. Overnight Abomey.

Day 4: Agongointo Underground Village & Porto Novo

Morning: visit Agongointo — the 17th-century underground village, a network of subterranean rooms and tunnels built as refuge from slave raiders. Drive to Porto Novo. Afternoon: Porto Novo’s Afro-Brazilian quarter — the Honme Royal Palace, the turquoise Grand Mosque, and the Da Silva Museum documenting the Aguda community (returned freed slaves from Brazil). Overnight Cotonou.

Day 5: Cotonou Markets & Departure

Morning: Dantokpa International Market — the fetish market section is a must (ritual items, animal skulls, herbs). Last-minute souvenir shopping at the Artisanal Center. Transfer to airport for departure.
