Day 1: Arrive Heraklion — Gateway to Minoan Crete
Arrive at Heraklion International Airport (HER). Private transfer to Hotel Hersonissos Central, your base for the first four nights in the lively coastal resort of Hersonissos — known for its sandy beaches, waterfront tavernas, and easy access to eastern Crete’s key sites. Evening: welcome orientation with your guide, followed by a stroll along the Hersonissos harbor promenade lined with traditional kafenions and seafood tavernas. Overnight Hersonissos.
Day 2: Knossos Palace — The Labyrinth of King Minos
Morning departure to Knossos Palace, Europe’s oldest city and the ceremonial and political heart of the Minoan civilization (1900–1350 BC). Walk through the reconstructed Grand Staircase, the Throne Room with its original alabaster seat flanked by griffin frescoes, and the Queen’s Megaron adorned with the famous dolphin fresco. Your guide brings to life the myths of King Minos, the Minotaur, and Daedalus’s labyrinth — a story woven into these very stones. Afternoon: visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to the world’s finest Minoan collection including the enigmatic Phaistos Disc, the Snake Goddess figurines, and the breathtaking ‘Prince of the Lilies’ fresco. Return to Hersonissos. Overnight Hersonissos.
Day 3: Land Rover Safari — Lassithi Plateau & Zeus Cave
Full-day Land Rover safari into the Lassithi Plateau, a fertile basin ringed by the Dikti Mountains at 850m elevation, once dotted with over 10,000 white-sailed windmills pumping water for irrigation. Ascend winding mountain roads to the Dikteon Cave (Psychro Cave), legendary birthplace of Zeus — according to myth, Rhea hid her infant son here from his father Cronus, and the cave’s massive stalactites and stalagmites form a subterranean cathedral that has been a sacred site since Minoan times. Lunch at a traditional mountain taverna in the village of Tzermiado, where you’ll taste authentic Cretan dishes: antikristo (lamb slow-roasted around an open fire), fresh myzithra cheese drizzled with thyme honey, and mountain greens (horta) foraged from the surrounding slopes. Afternoon: visit an olive oil press and the historic windmills at the entrance to the plateau. Return via the dramatic Selinari Gorge. Overnight Hersonissos.
Day 4: Spinalonga Island & Elounda — The Leper’s Fortress
Morning drive along Crete’s northeast coast to the chic fishing village of Elounda, set on a sheltered bay with views across to the barren Spinalonga island. Board a traditional kaiki (fishing boat) for the short crossing to Spinalonga — a 16th-century Venetian fortress turned Ottoman settlement, and from 1903 to 1957, Greece’s last leper colony. Walk the cobbled streets past abandoned houses, the hospital ruins, and the church of St. Panteleimon where lepers once prayed for miracles. Victoria Hislop’s novel ‘The Island’ brought this heartbreaking history to international attention, and standing here you’ll understand why. Afternoon: return to Elounda for a seafood lunch by the harbor, then free time to swim at Elounda’s Blue Flag beach or explore the sunken ancient city of Olous (visible through crystal-clear water). Day 5: Rethymnon — Venetian Fortezza & Old Town
Morning departure westward along the coast to Rethymnon, Crete’s best-preserved Renaissance city with one of the most intact old towns in Greece. Explore the labyrinthine alleys of the old town where Venetian loggias, Ottoman minarets, and elegant 16th-century merchant houses coexist in harmonious layers of history. Climb to the Fortezza, the massive Venetian fortress crowning the hill with panoramic views over the Cretan Sea and the White Mountains beyond. Afternoon: free time to wander Rethymnon’s harbor, visit the Rimondi Fountain (1626) with its lion-head spouts, or sample local bougatsa (custard-filled phyllo pastry) at a traditional bakery. Late afternoon drive to Chania, Crete’s most beautiful city. Overnight Chania.
Day 6: Chania — Venetian Harbor, Lighthouse & Old Town
Full day exploring Chania, the jewel of Crete. Morning walking tour through the Venetian Harbor — one of the Mediterranean’s most photogenic waterfronts — past the Egyptian Lighthouse (rebuilt 1830s), the Firkas Fortress, and the Great Arsenal where Venetian galleys were repaired. Explore Chania’s old town, a maze of narrow alleys bursting with bougainvillea, artisan leather workshops, and Byzantine churches converted from Venetian chapels. Visit the Mosque of the Janissaries (1645), the oldest Ottoman building on the island, and the covered Municipal Market (1913) with its cross-shaped design. Afternoon free: perhaps visit the Maritime Museum, climb to the Profitis Ilias viewpoint for sunset, or simply get lost in the old town’s enchanting backstreets. Evening: Cretan feast at a family-run taverna — a celebratory dinner of kalitsounia (cheese pies), gamopilafo (wedding pilaf), and raki toasts. Overnight Chania.
Day 7: Departure
Transfer to Chania International Airport (CHQ) or Heraklion Airport (HER) for departure. Option to extend your stay in Chania to explore the famous beaches of Falassarna, Balos Lagoon, and Elafonisi.
