Day 1: Arrive Heraklion — Minoan Welcome
Arrive at Heraklion Airport. Afternoon orientation walk through Heraklion’s city center — Lions Square with the Morosini Fountain (1628), the Venetian Loggia, and the 25th of August Street leading to the old harbor. Visit the Koules Fortress (Rocca al Mare), the imposing 16th-century Venetian sea-fortress guarding the harbor entrance. Evening: welcome drink at a traditional kafenion, sampling raki with mezze. Overnight Heraklion.
Day 2: Knossos Palace & Journey South
Morning visit to Knossos Palace, the 4,000-year-old Minoan capital — the Grand Staircase, Throne Room, Queen’s Megaron, and the Central Court. After the archaeological immersion, drive south across Crete’s mountainous spine through dramatic gorges and olive groves to the Libyan Sea coast. Arrive at Plakias, a former fishing village with one of the longest sandy beaches on the south coast — a sweeping crescent backed by dramatic cliffs. Afternoon free to swim, snorkel, or simply soak up the untamed south-coast atmosphere. Overnight Plakias area.
Day 3: Argyroupoli Springs & Traditional Villages
Morning drive to Argyroupoli (Ancient Lappa), a mountain village built atop the ruins of a Roman city where natural springs cascade through lush greenery, powering old watermills and creating a microclimate of waterfalls and plane trees. The springs feed tavernas where you can dine with your feet practically in the running water — a uniquely Cretan experience. Continue through the foothills of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), past villages where elderly women still tend vegetable gardens and donkeys carry firewood. Afternoon: arrive in the village of Imbros, a traditional settlement with stone houses and a deep gorge nearby. Overnight in the Imbros/Vrisses area.
Day 4: Chania — Crete’s Most Beautiful City
Morning drive to Chania. Full day exploring the Venetian Harbor — the Egyptian Lighthouse, Firkas Fortress, Great Arsenal, and the Mosque of the Janissaries. Wander the old town’s alleyways: leather workshops on Skridlof Street, the Jewish Quarter (Evraiki) with its restored Etz Hayyim Synagogue, and the Topanas district where Venetian nobles built their palazzos. Visit the covered Municipal Market for local products: Cretan olive oil, mountain thyme honey, graviera cheese, and traditional Cretan knives (sari machairia). Afternoon: climb to the Profitis Ilias viewpoint for a panoramic sunset over the harbor — the lighthouse silhouetted against the golden sky is Chania’s signature image. Overnight Chania.
Day 5: Agia Roumeli — Gateway to Samaria
Early morning drive to Chora Sfakion (Sfakia), the rugged mountain port on the south coast known for its defiant independence — Sfakians have resisted every invader from Venetians to Ottomans to Germans. From Sfakia, board the coastal ferry to Agia Roumeli, a remote village at the mouth of the Samaria Gorge accessible only by boat or via a 16km hike through Europe’s longest gorge. Agia Roumeli marks the official end point of the Samaria trek — you can walk the final kilometer of the gorge trail from the village, pass through the ‘Iron Gates’ (the gorge’s narrowest point, just 3m wide), and feel the towering 300m rock walls close in around you. Swim at Agia Roumeli’s black-pebble beach where the gorge river meets the Libyan Sea. Afternoon ferry back to Sfakia and drive to your accommodation. This day is a highlight for anyone who dreams of Samaria but prefers a more accessible approach. Overnight Rethymnon area.
Day 6: Matala — Hippie Caves & Libyan Sea
Morning drive across southern Crete to Matala, the legendary hippie enclave of the 1960s and 70s where Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Cat Stevens once lived in Neolithic cliffside tombs carved into the sandstone above a perfect crescent beach. Walk up into the caves, read the carved initials and dates from various eras, and look out over the Libyan Sea from the same vantage points that inspired Mitchell’s song ‘Carey.’ Afternoon: free time to swim at Matala beach, hike the coastal path to Red Beach (Kokkini Ammos — clothing optional), or explore the village’s bohemian shops and cafes. Late afternoon drive back toward Heraklion. Farewell dinner at a traditional taverna with wine and live Cretan lyra music. Overnight Heraklion area.
Day 7: Departure
Transfer to Heraklion Airport for departure.
