9-Day Enchanting North: Salinas Grandes, Hornocal & Quebrada de Humahuaca

Day 1: Arrive Salta

Arrive Salta. Afternoon colonial walking tour. Evening peña dinner. Overnight at Hotel Villa Vicuña, Salta (boutique 4★).

Day 2: Salta Exploration

MAAM museum (Inca mummies), San Bernardo Hill cable car, San Francisco Church, artisan market. Afternoon free. Overnight Salta.

Day 3: Train to the Clouds Route

Drive to San Antonio de los Cobres (3,775m). Visit Polvorilla Viaduct (4,220m) — steel bridge spanning a desert canyon, one of the highest railways in the world. Afternoon: salt flat workers’ village visit. Coca tea. Overnight San Antonio de los Cobres.

Day 4: Salinas Grandes Sunset

Morning at leisure for altitude adjustment. Late afternoon: Salinas Grandes (3,450m) at golden hour — the salt crust turns from blinding white to champagne to rose as the sun sets behind the Andes. Perspective-bending photos with 360° flat horizon. Overnight near Salinas/Purmamarca.

Day 5: Salinas Grandes Sunrise & Purmamarca

Pre-dawn return to Salinas Grandes for sunrise — the salt pan glows electric blue in the pre-dawn light, then explodes into gold. Morning: Purmamarca — Hill of Seven Colors, Paseo de los Colorados, artisan market. Afternoon: Maimara’s Painter’s Palette hillside and cemetery. Overnight at Terrazas de la Posta, Tilcara (boutique).

Day 6: Tilcara & Uquía

Morning: Pucará de Tilcara (12th-century fortress), archaeological museum. Afternoon: Uquía church — Arquebusier Angels. Evening free in Tilcara’s bohemian village. Overnight Tilcara.

Day 7: Serranía del Hornocal — Hill of Fourteen Colors

Full day: drive to the Serranía del Hornocal viewpoint (4,350m) east of Humahuaca. This V-shaped fold of sedimentary rock reveals 14 distinct color bands — the most spectacular of all the Quebrada’s colored mountains, and mercifully far less visited than Purmamarca. Hike the viewpoint ridge, photograph the 14-color palette, and descend for lunch in Humahuaca town. Afternoon: Humahuaca’s colonial church and Independence Monument. Return to Tilcara.

Day 8: Hornaditas Community Day

Visit Hornaditas, a traditional Kolla indigenous community. Learn about subsistence farming at 3,000m, traditional weaving, and the veneration of Pachamama (Mother Earth). Share a communal lunch prepared by community members — llama stew, quinoa, and freshly baked bread. Afternoon: hike to a nearby archaeological site. Farewell dinner with the community. Overnight Tilcara.

Day 9: Return to Salta & Departure

Morning drive to Salta (3 hours). Transfer to airport.
