13-Day Saudi Arabia Explorer: Riyadh to Abha — Off the Beaten Path

Day 1: Arrive Riyadh

Arrive Riyadh. Afternoon: Masmak Fortress and National Museum. Evening: Kingdom Tower Sky Bridge. Overnight Riyadh.

Day 2: Diriyah & Riyadh Markets

Morning: Diriyah UNESCO site — At-Turaif. Afternoon: Al Zal souq, Murabba Palace. Overnight Riyadh.

Day 3: Buraydah Camel Market

Drive to Al-Qassim. Visit the world’s largest camel market — thousands of camels traded daily. Continue to Buraydah Date Market. Overnight Buraydah/Hail.

Day 4: Jubbah to AlUla

Jubbah UNESCO petroglyphs (5,500 years). Drive to AlUla. Elephant Rock at sunset. Overnight AlUla.

Day 5: Hegra Full Day

UNESCO Hegra: Qasr al-Farid, Jabal AlBanat (29 tombs), Dadan, Jabal Ikmah. Overnight AlUla.

Day 6: AlUla to Medina

Morning at leisure in AlUla. Drive to Medina. Afternoon: Prophet’s Mosque plaza, Al-Madinah Museum. Overnight Medina.

Day 7: Medina to Al Bahah

Drive south to Al Bahah in the Sarawat Mountains. Visit Thee Ain — a 400-year-old marble village cascading down a mountainside, one of Saudi’s most photogenic traditional settlements. Overnight Al Bahah.

Day 8: Asir Mountains — Abha

Drive to Abha, capital of Asir Province at 2,200m. Visit the Shada Palace museum. Afternoon: Habala — the “Hanging Village” accessible only by cable car, where the Qahtani tribe once lived in cliffside dwellings reachable only by rope. Overnight Abha.

Day 9: Rijal Almaa & Al Soudah

Morning: Rijal Almaa — a UNESCO-candidate village of multi-story stone-and-mud towers with white-framed windows, built by the region’s wealthy traders. Some towers date to the 14th century. Afternoon: Al Soudah (3,015m), Saudi’s highest peak — juniper forests, cool mist, and panoramic views. Rides on the Asir hanging cable car. Overnight Abha.

Day 10: Asir Culture

Morning: Tuesday traditional market in Abha (if timing permits) or the Al-Muftaha Art Village. Afternoon: visit a local Asiri home to see the traditional flower-crown headdresses worn by men and the geometric wall paintings (Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, UNESCO intangible heritage) created by women. Overnight Abha.

Day 11: Fly to Jeddah

Morning flight from Abha to Jeddah (1 hour, included). Afternoon: Al-Balad old town, Naseef House, Souq Al-Alawi. Overnight Jeddah.

Day 12: Jeddah Farewell

Morning: Tayebat Museum. Afternoon: Corniche, Al Rahmah floating mosque, free time. Farewell dinner. Overnight Jeddah.

Day 13: Departure

Transfer to Jeddah Airport.
