Day 2: Kigali — History & Culture
Morning: Kigali Genocide Memorial — an essential, profound experience. Afternoon: Inema Arts Centre, Nyamirambo walking tour (Kigali’s oldest neighborhood), Caplaki Craft Village for shopping. Overnight Kigali.
Day 3: Volcanoes National Park — Golden Monkeys & Dian Fossey
Early morning drive to Musanze (Ruhengeri), gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The five Virunga volcanoes — Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura — dominate the skyline. Morning: golden monkey trek — these endangered primates with their golden-orange fur live in the bamboo forests at the base of the volcanoes. Unlike gorillas, they’re constantly active, leaping through the bamboo with acrobatic grace. The trek is less strenuous than gorilla trekking but equally magical. Afternoon: hike to the Dian Fossey Research Station (or the easier hike to the Karisoke memorial site), where the legendary primatologist worked and is buried alongside her beloved gorilla Digit. The views across the Virunga massif from her grave are spectacular. Overnight Musanze.
Day 4: Musanze to Lake Kivu — Coffee & Caves
Morning: visit the Musanze Caves — a 2km lava tube formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago, once used as shelter during conflicts, now a fascinating underground walk. Visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for an immersive experience in traditional Rwandan life: basket weaving, traditional medicine, archery, and the unforgettable Intore dance performance (the dance of heroes). Afternoon: drive to Gisenyi on Lake Kivu. Sunset on the lakeshore. Overnight Gisenyi.
Day 5: Lake Kivu — Full Exploration
Boat trip to Napoleon Island (fruit bats, birds), fishing village visit, and swimming in Lake Kivu. Afternoon: drive south along the lake, stopping at tea plantations and the scenic coves of Kibuye. Overnight Kibuye.
Day 6: Nyungwe Forest — Canopy & Chimps
Early drive to Nyungwe National Park. Morning: the epic canopy walkway — 160m, 50m high, through the rainforest canopy with colobus monkeys leaping nearby. Afternoon chimpanzee trek — track a habituated community through the ancient forest. Overnight Nyungwe.
Day 7: Nyungwe to Akagera — To the Savannah
A long but rewarding drive across Rwanda (5-6 hours) from the western rainforest to the eastern savannah. Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park, and its revival is one of Africa’s great conservation success stories. Afternoon game drive: the park is now home to the Big Five (lions reintroduced 2015, rhinos 2017), plus giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and over 500 bird species around the lakes. Akagera’s landscape — a mosaic of savannah, woodland, wetland, and a dozen lakes — is uniquely beautiful. Overnight Akagera lodge.
Day 8: Akagera Morning Safari & Return to Kigali
Dawn game drive — the best time for predators. Lions are most active in the early morning, and the light over Lake Ihema is magical. Mid-morning exit the park and drive to Kigali (2.5 hours). Afternoon departure or overnight in Kigali.
