Day 1: Arrive Ende — Gateway to Flores
Fly from Bali to Ende, central Flores. Transfer to Moni, a small mountain village near Kelimutu. The drive climbs through lush volcanic landscapes, past terraced rice fields and traditional villages. Afternoon at leisure to explore Moni’s waterfalls and hot springs. Early night — tomorrow starts before dawn. Overnight Moni.
Day 2: Kelimutu — The Tri-Colored Lakes at Dawn
Pre-dawn departure (4 AM) to reach Kelimutu’s summit for sunrise. Kelimutu is one of Indonesia’s most mystical natural wonders — three crater lakes on a 1,639m volcano, each a different color. The lakes shift hues over time: Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually dark, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) is often turquoise, and Tiwu Ata Polo (Enchanted Lake) can be red, green, or black. Local Lio people believe the souls of the dead journey here — the color of each lake corresponds to the character of the souls within. Watching the sun rise over the tri-colored lakes as mist swirls in the craters is one of Southeast Asia’s most transcendent experiences. Return to Moni for breakfast, then drive east. Stop at Mengeruda hot springs for a soak in natural thermal pools fed by volcanic heat. Continue to Bajawa, high in the Ngada highlands. Overnight Bajawa.
Day 3: Bajawa — Ngada Villages & Volcano Views
Morning exploration of the Ngada cultural heartland. Visit Bena, a traditional village with megalithic stone altars, thatched-roof houses arranged in two rows, and the distinctive ngadhu and bhaga structures (male and female ancestral shrines topped with carved wooden figures). The villagers still practice their animist beliefs alongside Catholicism — buffalo horns and pig jawbones decorate the houses to indicate sacrificial status. Panoramic views of Mount Inerie’s perfect volcanic cone. Afternoon: drive west to Ruteng through the spectacular Spider Web Rice Fields (lingko) of Cancar — vast circular rice paddies divided like pie slices, a unique Manggarai agricultural tradition. Overnight Ruteng.
Day 4: Wae Rebo — The Village in the Clouds
Early morning drive to Dintor, the trailhead for Wae Rebo. The 9-kilometer trek climbs through dense tropical forest, crossing streams and bamboo groves, for about 3-4 hours. Wae Rebo sits at 1,200 meters in a misty mountain bowl — a cluster of seven towering conical houses (Mbaru Niang) with thatched roofs reaching toward the sky like giant witch’s hats. These houses are architectural masterpieces: five stories tall, built entirely without nails, using only rope bindings and traditional joinery. The community (about 1,200 people across several clans) maintains its ancient way of life. Participate in the welcoming ceremony (wae lu’u), share dinner with the villagers, listen to their songs and stories after dark. Sleep in a traditional house, wrapped in hand-woven ikat blankets. Day 5: Wae Rebo to Labuan Bajo
Morning farewell to the village after breakfast. Trek down through the misty forest. Drive to Labuan Bajo, the jumping-off point for Komodo National Park. Labuan Bajo is a lively port town on Flores’s western tip — sunset over the harbor, where phinisi schooners rock at anchor, is a daily spectacle. Evening dinner of fresh grilled fish at the night market. Overnight Labuan Bajo.
Day 6: Komodo — Padar Island & Pink Beach
Board your phinisi boat and sail into Komodo National Park (UNESCO World Heritage). First stop: Padar Island. The 30-minute hike to the summit viewpoint is steep but the reward is legendary — a 360-degree panorama of three crescent-shaped bays (black, white, and pink sand) separated by knife-edge ridges, the turquoise Flores Sea stretching to the horizon. Next: Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), one of only seven pink sand beaches in the world — the color comes from microscopic red organisms (foraminifera) mixed with white coral sand. Snorkel in the coral gardens just offshore — parrotfish, angelfish, and sometimes turtles. Late afternoon: cruise to Kalong Island as the sun sets, where thousands of flying foxes (giant fruit bats with 1.5m wingspans) stream out of the mangroves in an endless river against the orange sky. Overnight on the boat under the stars.
Day 7: Komodo Dragons & Manta Point
Morning landing on Komodo Island (or Rinca Island, depending on conditions). Komodo dragons are the world’s largest lizards — up to 3 meters long, 70 kilograms, ambush predators with venom glands that cause paralysis and hemorrhaging. Walk with a park ranger through the dry savanna and monsoon forest, watching these prehistoric creatures in their natural habitat. The dragons are completely wild — you may see them stalking deer, basking in the sun, or holding their ground with an unsettling stare and flickering forked tongue. Afternoon: sail to Manta Point, where the nutrient-rich currents attract reef manta rays — these gentle giants (up to 5.5m wingspan) glide through the water performing barrel rolls as they feed. Snorkel among them (conditions permitting). Overnight on the boat.
Day 8: Kanawa Island & Return to Labuan Bajo
Morning at Kanawa Island — a tiny speck of white sand in turquoise water with some of the best house reef snorkeling in Komodo. Swim with giant trevally, cuttlefish, and clouds of anthias. Afternoon return to Labuan Bajo. Rest, shower, and enjoy sunset drinks at a harbor bar. Overnight Labuan Bajo.
Day 9: Free Day Labuan Bajo — Cave Explorer
Optional activities: visit Rangko Cave, a limestone cave with a crystal-clear turquoise pool (accessible by boat and short hike), or explore the Cunca Wulang waterfall canyon. Alternatively, relax by the pool and enjoy your last day in Flores. Farewell dinner. Overnight Labuan Bajo.
Day 10: Departure from Labuan Bajo
Morning at leisure. Transfer to Komodo Airport for your flight back to Bali or onward journey.
