4-Day Kigali & Lake Kivu Escape: City, Hills & Water

Day 1: Arrive Kigali

Arrive Kigali. Afternoon: visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial — allow 2-3 hours for the full experience. The memorial gardens, mass graves (250,000 victims rest here), and the exhibitions tracing Rwanda’s journey from tragedy to reconciliation set the context for everything that follows. Evening: dinner at a Kigali restaurant — try isombe (cassava leaves with peanut sauce), ugali, and brochettes. Overnight Kigali.

Day 2: Kigali Culture Day

Morning: Inema Arts Centre — 10 resident artists, a sculpture garden, and the famous “I Am Rwanda” mural. The gallery showcases Rwanda’s exploding contemporary art scene. Continue to Nyamirambo, Kigali’s oldest and liveliest neighborhood, for a walking tour led by women from the Nyamirambo Women’s Center — a social enterprise supporting education for local women. The mosque, the colorful houses, the hair salons, and the energy are pure Kigali. Afternoon: Kimironko Market — the sensory overload of East African commerce. Fresh produce, massive avocados (Rwandan avocados are legendary), fabrics, and everyday Rwandan life. Overnight Kigali.

Day 3: The Hills to Lake Kivu

Morning drive west through Rwanda’s famous hills — the views are nonstop. Stop at a coffee washing station in the Gakenke hills for tasting and a tour. Rwanda’s volcanic soil produces exceptional Arabica, and the cooperative model has transformed rural communities. Arrive in Gisenyi by early afternoon. The lake reveals itself dramatically as you descend from the hills — blue water stretching to the mountains of the DRC. Afternoon: boat trip on Lake Kivu, visiting the fruit bat colony on Napoleon Island, swimming from the boat in the lake’s clear water, and cruising past fishing villages. Sunset on the lakeshore. Overnight Gisenyi.

Day 4: Lake Kivu to Kigali

Morning: visit a tea plantation near Gisenyi — walk the manicured slopes with women pickers, learn about the manufacture, and taste Rwanda’s excellent tea. Late morning drive back to Kigali. Afternoon: last-minute shopping at Caplaki Craft Village (traditional crafts, Imigongo paintings, woven baskets). Transfer to airport for departure.
