Day 1: Arrive Luanda — Fly to Lubango
Arrive Luanda. Connect directly to Lubango (1.5-hour flight south). Afternoon: Cristo Rei statue with panoramic city views. Overnight Lubango.
Day 2: Tundavala Fissure & Serra da Leba
Morning: Tundavala Fissure — a 1,200m vertical cliff face at the edge of the Serra da Chela escarpment, where the highlands end in a dramatic drop. Views stretch to the Atlantic on clear days. Afternoon: drive the Serra da Leba switchback road — 11 hairpin bends descending 1,600m. Arrive Namibe. Overnight Namibe.
Day 3: Namibe, Arco Lagoon & Iona NP
Morning: Namibe’s archaeological museum and the stunning Arco Lagoon — a natural rock arch on the coast. Afternoon: enter Iona National Park (15,200 km²), Angola’s largest protected area. The landscape is alien: cream-colored sand dunes marching toward the sea, where the cold Benguela Current creates coastal fog — the only moisture in this hyper-arid ecosystem. Spot flamingos at the lagoon mouths, Cape fur seals on rocky outcrops, and if lucky, Heaviside’s dolphins in the surf. Overnight at a tented camp in Iona or near Tombua.
Day 4: Costa dos Esqueletos & Espinheira
The Skeleton Coast experience: shipwrecks rusting on the sand (remnants of the treacherous Namibian coast), endless beaches with no footprints, and the raw power of the Atlantic meeting the world’s oldest desert. Drive to Espinheira through ever-changing dune landscapes. Search for Welwitschia mirabilis — living fossil plants up to 1,500 years old, their shredded leaves spreading across the sand. Overnight Espinheira tented camp.
Day 5: Mucubal Tribe & Virei Rock Art
Morning: visit a Mucubal (Mucawana) semi-nomadic settlement. The Mucubal are pastoralists related to the Herero of Namibia, known for the women’s distinctive dress, elaborate beaded jewelry and headdresses, and the ochre-covered bodies of the men. Unlike the Mwila to the north, the Mucubal maintain a more traditional semi-nomadic cattle-herding existence. Afternoon: Virei — prehistoric rock paintings and engravings on granite outcrops, some dating back 4,000-8,000 years, depicting antelope, human figures, and geometric patterns. Overnight near Virei.
Day 6: Cunene River & Tombua
Drive to the Cunene River mouth where it empties into the Atlantic — a surreal collision of desert and water, with flamingos feeding at the estuary, dolphins in the surf, and dunes towering above. Then: the Red Canyon near Tombua — colorful sedimentary rock walls similar to the Fish River Canyon in Namibia but completely undeveloped for tourism. Overnight Tombua or Namibe.
Day 7: Return to Lubango
Drive back up the Serra da Leba (photo stops at every hairpin). Afternoon: Lubango’s markets and the Huíla highlands. Farewell dinner in Lubango. Overnight Lubango.
Day 8: Return to Luanda & Departure
Morning flight to Luanda. Transfer to international airport.
