Day 1: Arrive Isfahan — Half of the World
Arrive at Isfahan International Airport. Transfer to your boutique hotel in the historic Armenian Quarter. Afternoon orientation walk through Isfahan’s atmospheric backstreets, past traditional teahouses and carpet workshops. Evening: sunset at Si-o-se-pol (Bridge of 33 Arches), a 17th-century masterpiece spanning the Zayandeh River — the golden light on its 33 arches is Isfahan’s most iconic image. Welcome dinner featuring Persian classics: fesenjan (pomegranate-walnut stew), saffron rice, and doogh (yogurt drink). Overnight in Isfahan.
Day 2: Naqsh-e Jahan Square — The UNESCO Marvel
Full day at Naqsh-e Jahan Square, one of the largest public squares in the world (160m × 560m), built by Shah Abbas I in 1598 as the centerpiece of his new capital. Visit the Shah Mosque (Imam Mosque) with its soaring 54m double-shelled dome — the acoustics are engineered so a single clap echoes seven times. Next: Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, an intimate jewel box with no minaret or courtyard, its golden dome shifting color from cream to pink throughout the day, and interior tiles that form peacock-tail arabesques. Climb Ali Qapu Palace’s six floors to the Music Room with its intricate stucco niches, then descend to the Grand Bazaar of Isfahan for Persian carpets, miniature paintings, and saffron. Afternoon: Chehel Sotoun Palace, the ‘Forty Columns’ pavilion reflected in a long pool, with frescoes depicting Safavid battles and ceremonies. Day 3: Isfahan’s Hidden Gems
Morning: Jolfa Armenian Quarter — visit Vank Cathedral (1655), a stunning blend of Persian and Christian architecture with gold-gilded frescoes depicting biblical scenes in Persian dress. Explore the Armenian Museum (the first printing press in Iran was established here). Afternoon free to revisit favorite spots or explore Isfahan’s modern art galleries and cafe culture. Day 4: Fly to Shiraz — City of Roses & Poets
Morning flight to Shiraz (1 hour). Shiraz is the heartland of Persian culture — city of Hafez and Saadi, of cypress gardens and rose water, of wine that once rivaled Bordeaux. Afternoon: Nasir al-Mulk Mosque — the ‘Pink Mosque’ — arrive around mid-morning when sunlight streams through its stained-glass windows, painting the prayer hall floor in a rainbow-colored carpet of light. Visit Narenjestan-e Ghavam, a 19th-century merchant’s mansion with mirrored halls and a courtyard filled with bitter orange trees. Evening: Hafez Tomb — join Shirazis as they gather at dusk to recite poetry, open the Divan-e Hafez at random for divination (fal-e Hafez), and sip tea under cypress trees. Overnight in Shiraz.
Day 5: Persepolis & Naqsh-e Rostam — Empire of Kings
Full day excursion to Persepolis (60km from Shiraz). Built by Darius the Great in 518 BC and expanded by Xerxes and Artaxerxes over 150 years, Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire — the largest empire the world had ever seen, stretching from the Indus to the Nile. Walk the Grand Staircase (111 shallow steps designed for kings in flowing robes), pass through the Gate of All Nations guarded by massive lamassu (human-headed winged bulls), and explore the Apadana Palace with its 72 columns and famous reliefs of 23 subject nations bringing tribute — Medes, Elamites, Babylonians, Lydians, Ethiopians, and more. Visit the Hundred Column Hall (throne room) and the Treasury where Alexander the Great looted enough gold to require 20,000 mules and 5,000 camels. Afternoon: Naqsh-e Rostam — four colossal rock-cut tombs of Achaemenid kings (Darius I, Xerxes I, Artaxerxes I, and Darius II) carved into a sheer cliff face, plus eight Sassanid reliefs depicting royal investitures and victories over Roman emperors. Return to Shiraz. Overnight Shiraz.
Day 6: Shiraz Deep Dive
Morning: Vakil Complex — the elegant Vakil Mosque (1773) with 48 twisted stone columns, the atmospheric Vakil Bazaar with its vaulted brick ceilings and spice-scented air, and the Vakil Bathhouse turned anthropology museum. Afternoon: Eram Garden — a UNESCO Persian Garden with 200-year-old cypress trees, reflecting pools, and the Qavam House pavilion. Visit the Tomb of Saadi, Shiraz’s other great poet, with its turquoise dome. Free evening for last explorations — perhaps climb to the Quran Gate viewpoint or sample Shirazi faloodeh (frozen rose-water noodles, a 2,000-year-old dessert). Farewell dinner. Overnight Shiraz.
