Day 1: Arrive Muscat — Jewel of Arabia
Arrive at Muscat International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque — a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture completed in 2001, with the world’s second-largest handwoven carpet (1,700 million knots, 21 tons) and a 14-meter Swarovski crystal chandelier. The mosque’s gardens, arcades, and prayer hall embody understated Omani elegance. Late afternoon: stroll the Mutrah Corniche with its incense-scented air, watching dhows bob in the harbor. Explore Mutrah Souq — labyrinthine alleys of frankincense, silver jewelry, Omani halwa (sweet confection), and pashmina scarves. Welcome dinner at a fish restaurant on the Corniche. Overnight Muscat.
Day 2: Coastal Road — Sinkholes, Wadis & Dhow Builders
Morning drive east along the spectacular coastal road. First stop: Bimmah Sinkhole, a perfectly circular limestone sinkhole filled with impossibly turquoise water — swim with tiny fish in the mineral-rich pool. Continue to Wadi Shab, one of Oman’s most beautiful valley oases. Hike 45 minutes through the wadi past date palms, turquoise pools, and narrow canyon walls. The trail ends at a cave accessible only by swimming through a narrow keyhole — inside, a waterfall cascades into a hidden chamber. It’s one of Oman’s most magical moments. Afternoon: arrive in Sur, the historic dhow-building port where wooden ships are still constructed by hand using traditional methods. Visit the dhow yard to see craftsmen at work — Oman’s maritime heritage is alive here. Overnight Ras al Jinz area.
Day 3: Turtle Sanctuary & Wahiba Sands
Pre-dawn: Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, one of the most important nesting sites for endangered green turtles in the Indian Ocean. Under the guidance of reserve rangers, watch female turtles haul themselves onto the beach, dig nests with their flippers, and lay their eggs (seasonal; year-round with peaks May-September). After breakfast, drive into the Wahiba Sands — a sea of golden dunes stretching 200km north to south. Switch to 4×4 for dune driving: roller-coaster rides over 100-meter sand ridges. Arrive at your desert camp — traditional Bedouin-style tents with modern comforts. Afternoon: camel ride at sunset, then a traditional Omani dinner cooked underground (shuwa style) or over an open fire. Spend the evening around the campfire under the desert sky — the stargazing here is extraordinary, with zero light pollution. Overnight Wahiba Sands desert camp.
Day 4: Wahiba to Nizwa — Forts & Souqs
Sunrise over the dunes — the golden-red light transforming the sand into waves of fire. After breakfast, drive west to Nizwa, Oman’s historic capital. Visit Wadi Bani Khalid en route — the most accessible of Oman’s wadis, with year-round emerald pools lined with date palms, perfect for a swim. Arrive in Nizwa by afternoon. Visit Nizwa Fort, built in the 1660s, with its massive circular cannon tower — climb to the top for views over the date palm oasis and the Hajar Mountains. Explore Nizwa Souq, famous for its silver jewelry (the Omani khanjar dagger is the national symbol), hand-thrown pottery, and dates — Oman produces over 250 varieties. If it’s Friday morning, the livestock market is an unforgettable spectacle of cattle, goats, and spirited bidding. Overnight Nizwa.
Day 5: Jebel Akhdar — The Green Mountain
Morning drive up Jebel Akhdar (the “Green Mountain”), part of the Al Hajar range and one of Oman’s most spectacular destinations. The road climbs to 2,000 meters through hairpin bends (4×4 required). At the summit plateau, the climate is Mediterranean: terraced orchards grow pomegranates, apricots, walnuts, and the famous damask roses used for Omani rose water. Walk through the ancient aflaj irrigation channels — a UNESCO-listed water management system that has sustained mountain agriculture for millennia. Visit the cliffside villages of Al Aqr and Al Ayn, where stone houses cling to the canyon rim above a dramatic gorge. Lunch with mountain views. Afternoon: visit Birkat Al Mauz, a ruined mud-brick village at the mountain’s foot, then drive back to Muscat for a farewell dinner. Overnight Muscat.
Day 6: Departure
Morning at leisure — perhaps a final walk along the Mutrah Corniche, or last-minute souvenir shopping for frankincense and Omani silver. Transfer to Muscat International Airport for departure.
