5-Day Panama & San Blas Islands: Guna Yala Indigenous Encounter

Day 1: Arrive Panama City — Casco Antiguo

Arrive Tocumen International Airport. Transfer to Casco Viejo, Panama City’s UNESCO-listed historic quarter. Afternoon walking tour through 17th-century plazas, past the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Presidential Palace. Climb the Cathedral bell tower for panoramic views across the bay to the modern skyline. Evening at a rooftop bar watching the sun set behind the Bridge of the Americas. Overnight Panama City.

Day 2: Panama Canal & Panama La Vieja

Morning visit to the Miraflores Locks—watch enormous Panamax vessels rise 16.5 meters through the lock chambers. The visitor center’s four-story museum chronicles the canal’s 34-year construction and 1914 opening. Afternoon at Panama La Vieja, the ruins of the original city sacked by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671, including the still-standing Cathedral tower. Evening free to explore Casco’s excellent restaurant scene. Overnight Panama City.

Day 3: Journey to San Blas — Island Paradise

Early 4×4 departure through the lush jungle of the Guna Yala comarca. The road winds through 400-year-old rainforest before emerging at the Caribbean coast. Board a motorized dugout canoe for the 30-minute journey into the San Blas archipelago. Your base: a rustic overwater cabana on a palm-fringed island. Afternoon island-hopping to the Natural Pool sandbar, snorkeling over coral gardens, and meeting Guna women selling their world-famous molas—intricate reverse-appliqué textiles. Fresh seafood dinner under the stars. Overnight San Blas island cabana.

Day 4: Full Day San Blas — Island Hopping

A full day of Caribbean bliss. Morning visit to Isla Perro to snorkel around a sunken cargo ship now encrusted with coral and buzzing with tropical fish. Continue to Isla Chichime, one of the archipelago’s most photogenic islands with a single palm tree and powder-white sand. Lunch of grilled lobster or fresh-caught snapper prepared by your Guna hosts. Afternoon free to kayak, beachcomb, or simply swing in a hammock with a cold Balboa beer. Sunset bonfire on the beach. Overnight San Blas.

Day 5: Sunrise Swim & Return

Early morning swim in the glass-calm Caribbean—the light at dawn over San Blas is photographer’s gold. After breakfast, return by boat and 4×4 to Panama City, arriving by early afternoon. Transfer to Tocumen Airport or extend your stay in Panama City.
