5-Day Suriname Express: Paramaribo, Commewijne & Brownsberg

Day 1: Arrive Paramaribo

Arrive in Paramaribo. Afternoon UNESCO walk: Presidential Palace, Waterkant riverside, Palm Garden. Keizerstraat’s mosque-synagogue co-existence. Welcome dinner of Surinamese specialties. Overnight Paramaribo.

Day 2: Paramaribo — Multicultural City Tour

Full day: Central Market’s multicultural chaos, Arya Dewaker Hindu Temple, Neveh Shalom Synagogue (1835), St. Peter & Paul wooden cathedral. Afternoon: Fort Zeelandia museum. Evening at a casual Surinamese-Javanese warung (food stall). Overnight Paramaribo.

Day 3: Commewijne River — Plantation Heritage

Morning boat trip on the Commewijne River to the former plantations of Peperpot (now a nature park with howler monkeys), Mariënburg (sugar factory ruins), and Frederiksdorp (beautifully restored plantation guesthouse). Lunch at a riverside restaurant. The Commewijne tells Suriname’s most complex story — Dutch engineering, enslaved African labor, and the Javanese and Indian indentured workers who followed. Overnight Paramaribo.

Day 4: Brownsberg Nature Park — Into the Rainforest

Morning drive 2.5 hours to Brownsberg plateau (500m). Full-day hiking: Leo Val Falls for a swim, the panoramic viewpoint over Brokopondo Reservoir, wildlife watching for howler monkeys and toucans. It’s a rainforest immersion that feels much deeper than its proximity to the capital suggests. Sunset on the plateau. Dinner at the park’s simple lodge. Overnight Brownsberg.

Day 5: Dawn Wildlife & Return

Dawn birdwatching — the forest comes alive at first light. Morning hike to Irene Falls. Drive back to Paramaribo. Transfer to the airport for departure.
