13-Day Antarctica Classic In Depth: Extended Peninsula Exploration

Day 1: Ushuaia — Gateway to Antarctica

Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina. Transfer to your hotel and explore the southernmost city on Earth. Evening welcome briefing. Overnight Ushuaia.

Day 2: Embarkation

Morning exploration of Tierra del Fuego. Afternoon embark your expedition ship. Sail the Beagle Channel. Evening welcome dinner as the ship heads south.

Days 3-4: Drake Passage

Two days crossing the Drake. Wandering albatross soar alongside the ship. Attend lectures: Antarctic history, penguin biology, ice dynamics, photography. Watch for the first icebergs. Cross the Antarctic Convergence.

Days 5-10: Antarctic Peninsula — Six Full Days

Six full days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and attempting to cross the Antarctic Circle at 66°33′ south. This is double the Peninsula time of many shorter cruises, allowing for deeper exploration and more ambitious landings.

Extended exploration includes:

Antarctic Circle attempt: Navigate south through the narrow channels of the Peninsula, past increasingly dense ice, aiming for the line that marks the southern limit of the midnight sun. A crossing ceremony celebrates this rare achievement.

Detaille Island: An abandoned British research station from the 1950s, frozen in time with supplies still on the shelves—a extraordinary glimpse into mid-century Antarctic life.

Lemaire Channel: The ‘Kodak Gap’—a narrow, iceberg-choked passage between towering peaks that is arguably the most beautiful stretch of water on Earth. Mirror-calm reflections double the mountains.

Petermann Island: The southernmost gentoo penguin colony on the Peninsula, with Adélie penguins often present. Views across to the Antarctic continent proper.

Extended whale watching: More days on the water mean more encounters with humpbacks, minkes, and orcas. February-March is peak whale season.

Scientific engagement: With more time, there are more opportunities to visit research stations and understand the critical science happening on the continent.

Each day features two Zodiac excursions. Each evening, expert recaps and planning sessions. Overnight in Antarctic waters (6 nights).

Days 11-12: Drake Passage Return

Cross back across the Drake. Final lectures, photo-sharing sessions, and reflection on the experience. Albatross escort the ship north. Enter the Beagle Channel. Farewell dinner.

Day 13: Disembark Ushuaia

Arrive Ushuaia. Disembark after breakfast. Transfer to the airport.
