Day 1: Windhoek to Okonjati Wildlife Sanctuary
Depart Windhoek, Namibia’s charming capital. Stop at Okahandja’s woodcarvers’ market — Namibia’s best place to buy handcrafted wooden sculptures and souvenirs. Continue to Okonjati Wildlife Sanctuary, a private reserve where you’ll enjoy your first Namibian game drive. Spot giraffe, zebra, kudu, oryx, and wildebeest against a backdrop of acacia-studded savannah. Sundowner drinks overlooking a waterhole as wildlife comes to drink. Overnight Okonjati.
Day 2: Etosha National Park — Wildlife Paradise
Enter Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries covering 22,270 km². The name means “Great White Place” in the local Oshiwambo language, referring to the vast Etosha Pan — a shimmering salt desert visible from space. Full-day game drive visiting waterholes where wildlife congregates: elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and massive herds of springbok. Overnight at Okaukuejo, whose floodlit waterhole offers some of Africa’s best night-time wildlife viewing — rhinos, elephants, and even leopards visit after dark. Overnight Okaukuejo.
Day 3: Etosha — East to West Safari
Cross Etosha from east to west, game-driving between waterholes. Visit Halali and the spectacular lookout point over the Etosha Pan. Search for the Big Four (no buffalo in Etosha) among the mopane woodlands and open grasslands. Afternoon visit to the Haunted Forest — a grove of dead camelthorn trees preserved by the salty pan soil, creating eerie silhouettes against the sky. Exit Etosha and continue to Kamanjab. Optional visit to a Himba village in the afternoon — learn about the traditions of Namibia’s iconic semi-nomadic people. Overnight Kamanjab.
Day 4: Damaraland to Palmwag — Desert-Adapted Wildlife
Journey through dramatic Damaraland, one of Namibia’s last true wildernesses. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Twyfelfontein — Africa’s largest concentration of ancient rock engravings, some dating back 6,000 years. Continue to the Organ Pipes — a remarkable geological formation of dolerite columns. Search for desert-adapted elephants in the ephemeral riverbeds of the Ugab and Huab — these remarkable animals have evolved to survive with less water than any elephant population on Earth. Arrive at Palmwag, a remote oasis in the arid northwest. Overnight Palmwag.
Day 5: Skeleton Coast — Shipwrecks & Cape Cross Seals
Enter the legendary Skeleton Coast — one of the world’s most hauntingly beautiful landscapes where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. Visit Cape Cross Seal Reserve, home to more than 200,000 Cape fur seals — one of the largest colonies on the planet. The sight, sound, and smell of so many seals is overwhelming and unforgettable. Continue southward along the desolate coastline, stopping at shipwreck sites including the rusted remains of vessels claimed by the treacherous Benguela Current. Arrive in Swakopmund, Namibia’s charming German colonial seaside town. Evening at a traditional German-Namibian restaurant — schnitzel and spätzle by the Atlantic. Overnight Swakopmund.
Day 6: Swakopmund — Coastal Adventures
Free day in Swakopmund, Namibia’s adventure capital. Optional activities: quad biking through the massive coastal dunes, sandboarding down towering sand walls, dolphin and seal cruises in Walvis Bay, scenic flights over the Skeleton Coast shipwrecks, or kayaking alongside Cape fur seals at Pelican Point. Alternatively, explore Swakopmund’s German colonial architecture — the Woermannhaus, the old railway station, and the pier. Visit the small but excellent aquarium and the Kristall Galerie with the world’s largest quartz crystal cluster. Overnight Swakopmund.
Day 7: Walvis Bay & Kuiseb Canyon
Morning visit to Walvis Bay Lagoon — a RAMSAR wetland site hosting tens of thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and migratory waders. Photograph the surreal sight of flamingos feeding with massive sand dunes as backdrop. Optional morning marine cruise to see dolphins, seals, and pelicans up close. Continue south to the Kuiseb Canyon — a dramatic 200m-deep gorge carved through the ancient Namib Desert. Cross the Tropic of Capricorn. Enter the Namib-Naukluft National Park and continue to Sesriem, gateway to Sossusvlei. Overnight Sesriem.
Day 8: Sossusvlei — The World’s Tallest Sand Dunes
Pre-dawn departure to catch the sunrise over Sossusvlei’s legendary dunes — the highest in the world, some reaching nearly 400 meters. Climb the famous Dune 45 as first light paints the sand in shades of orange, red, and gold. Continue to Deadvlei — a surreal white clay pan dotted with 900-year-old dead camelthorn trees, their blackened skeletons frozen against the red dunes and blue sky. It’s one of the most photographed landscapes on Earth. Visit Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge carved over millions of years. Afternoon drive through the spectacular desert scenery. Overnight near Sossusvlei.
Day 9: Return to Windhoek
Drive through the Khomas Hochland mountains back to Windhoek. Stop at Solitaire, the iconic desert outpost famous for its apple pie. Arrive Windhoek. Time permitting, explore the capital’s highlights: the Christuskirche, the Independence Memorial Museum, and the craft market. Transfer to Windhoek International Airport for departure.
