Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Luxembourg City — Fortress, Culture & Grand Ducal Heritage

Arrive in Luxembourg City and transfer to your elegant hotel. Afternoon comprehensive walking tour focusing on the city’s 1,000-year history as one of Europe’s most strategic fortifications. Begin at the Place de la Constitution with its Golden Lady war memorial, then descend into the Petrusse Valley to understand the natural defenses that shaped the city. Visit the Bock Casemates, the extraordinary UNESCO-listed underground passages where thousands of soldiers lived and fought. Walk the Chemin de la Corniche for breathtaking views. Continue to the Grand Ducal Palace (exterior visit), the official town residence of the Grand Duke since 1890. Visit the Notre-Dame Cathedral, housing the tomb of John the Blind. Day 2: Northern Ardennes — Clervaux, Vianden & Esch-sur-Sure

Depart Luxembourg City for the northern Oesling region, Luxembourg’s share of the Ardennes. First stop: Clervaux, a picture-perfect town dominated by its whitewashed castle. Visit The Family of Man photography exhibition inside the castle, Edward Steichen’s legendary UNESCO Memory of the World collection featuring 503 photographs from 68 countries, a moving tribute to universal human experiences. Continue through the dramatic landscape of the Our Valley to Vianden, where the castle rises majestically above the river. Your guided tour explores this masterpiece of medieval military architecture, the ancestral home of the Orange-Nassau dynasty. Descend via chairlift for lunch in Vianden’s charming square. Afternoon: journey to Esch-sur-Sure, arguably Luxembourg’s most beautiful village, wrapped around a meander of the River Sure in a deep valley. Climb the hilltop castle ruins for unforgettable views of the slate-roofed houses clustered below. Evening return to Luxembourg City.

Day 3: Mullerthal — Beaufort Castle, Echternach & Little Switzerland

Explore eastern Luxembourg’s Mullerthal region, known as Little Switzerland. Morning visit to Beaufort, home to not one but two castles: the atmospheric ruins of the medieval fortress (11th-14th centuries) and the elegant Renaissance chateau (1649). Tour both castles, learning about the fascinating history of the lords of Beaufort. Continue to Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town (founded 698 AD), on the banks of the River Sure. Visit the magnificent Basilica of St. Willibrord, built over the tomb of the Anglo-Saxon missionary who brought Christianity to the region. Admire the basilica’s Romanesque crypt with its 11th-century frescoes. After lunch on Echternach’s market square, a gentle hike into the Mullerthal’s famous rock formations: walk among the dramatic sandstone boulders of the Wollefsschlucht gorge, visit the ancient millstone quarry at the Hohllay Cave, and photograph the fairytale Schiessentumpel waterfall. Return to Luxembourg City for evening at leisure.

Day 4: Moselle Valley — Wine, Schengen & Roman Heritage

Journey south to the Moselle Valley, Luxembourg’s premier wine region. Morning visit to Schengen, the small wine village that gave its name to the landmark 1985 agreement that created Europe’s border-free zone. Tour the European Museum Schengen for a fascinating look at this pivotal moment in European history. Wine tasting at a family-owned estate in the Coteaux de Schengen, where vineyards slope steeply to the river. Continue to the Roman Villa in Echternach-adjacent Dalheim area, visiting the impressive remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement (vicus Ricciacum) that was an important stop on the Roman road from Metz to Trier. Lunch at a riverside restaurant in Remich. Afternoon visit to the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative in Wormeldange for a comprehensive tasting of Luxembourg’s finest Riesling, Pinot Gris, and the rare Elbling. Learn about the unique slate and limestone terroirs that define Luxembourg’s Moselle wines. Evening farewell dinner at a traditional winstub (wine tavern) in the heart of the Moselle wine country.

Day 5: Gutland & Departure — Valley of the Seven Castles

Final morning exploring the Gutland (Good Land), Luxembourg’s agricultural heartland. Drive the Valley of the Seven Castles, a scenic route through the Eisch Valley dotted with an extraordinary concentration of medieval castles: Mersch, Schoenfels, Hollenfels, the imposing ruins of Ansembourg Castle, the grand New Castle of Ansembourg, Septfontaines, and Koerich. Stop at the beautifully restored Hollenfels Castle to visit its youth hostel in the medieval keep and enjoy panoramic valley views from the towers. Conclude at Ansembourg’s magnificent French formal gardens, laid out in the 18th century with terraces, fountains, and mythological statues. After lunch, transfer to Luxembourg Findel Airport for your departure flight.
