Day 1: Sani Pass — Into the Kingdom in the Sky
Depart from Underberg or Himeville in the Drakensberg foothills. Ascend the legendary Sani Pass — Southern Africa’s highest road pass at 2,874 metres, requiring a 4×4 vehicle to navigate its steep switchbacks and hairpin bends. Every turn reveals more spectacular views across the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg mountains. Cross the border into Lesotho at Sani Top. Visit Africa’s Highest Pub (2,874m) for a celebratory drink. Descend into the highland interior through dramatic mountain scenery. Arrive at Semonkong — “Place of Smoke” in Sesotho — named for the mist created by Maletsunyane Falls. Overnight at a mountain lodge.
Day 2: Maletsunyane Falls & Basotho Village
Morning visit to Maletsunyane Falls — plunging 204 meters into a spectacular gorge. The falls freeze in winter creating an enormous ice column. Walk to multiple viewpoints above the gorge. For the adventurous: the world’s longest commercially operated single-drop abseil (204m) down the falls face! Afternoon visit to a traditional Basotho village. Meet local families, learn about Basotho blanket culture (each blanket pattern tells a story), and watch demonstrations of traditional crafts. Experience a taste of joala — traditional sorghum beer. Evening around a campfire with Basotho music and storytelling. Overnight Semonkong.
Day 3: Mountain Views & Return
Morning at leisure — perhaps a pony trek on sturdy Basotho ponies through the highland landscape (Lesotho’s traditional transport). Visit the Semonkong Lodge’s surrounding area for short hikes. Descend from the highlands, carrying memories of Africa’s highest country — a kingdom truly in the sky.
