Day 1: Arrive Bangui
Welcome at Bangui M’Poko International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon exploration of Bangui: the Central Market with its colorful displays of tropical fruits, fish from the Ubangi River, and local crafts. Visit the Boganda Museum for an introduction to the cultures of the Central African Republic. Evening briefing on the forest expedition. Overnight in Bangui.
Day 2: Bangui → Lobaye Forest — Into the Wild
Morning drive southwest from Bangui into the Lobaye Forest, one of the Congo Basin’s most accessible yet least-visited rainforest areas. Meet your Ba’Aka guides at their village — these are among the most skilled forest people on Earth, with knowledge accumulated over thousands of years. After introductions and a traditional welcome, begin the trek into the forest. The Ba’Aka move through the jungle with an ease that seems supernatural — reading trails that are invisible to outsiders, identifying every sound, and knowing which plants to eat, which to avoid, and which heal. The afternoon hike takes you to the first forest camp — a simple but comfortable setup of tarps and hammocks beside a clear stream. Evening: Ba’Aka storytelling around the fire. Overnight at Forest Camp 1.
Day 3: Wildlife Tracking & Jungle Skills
Full day deep in the forest. Dawn walk with Ba’Aka trackers — the forest comes alive at first light. Look for red colobus monkeys crashing through the canopy, duikers (small forest antelopes) disappearing into the undergrowth, and the flash of a great blue turaco’s wings. The Ba’Aka teach traditional tracking: reading footprints, interpreting scat, recognizing alarm calls. Midday: survival skills workshop — learn to make fire using only forest materials (no matches), build a waterproof shelter, and identify edible plants and water sources. The Ba’Aka demonstrate traditional net-hunting techniques — nets woven from forest lianas that can stretch for 100 meters. Evening: more stories, more stars — the night sky through the forest canopy is extraordinary. Overnight at Forest Camp 2.
Day 4: Deep Forest Expedition — The Heart of Lobaye
Today you venture deeper into the Lobaye Forest, moving camp to an even more remote location. The trek follows elephant trails — forest elephants are shy but their signs are everywhere: footprints, dung, broken branches, and the distinctive musky smell. The Ba’Aka read the forest like a book — pointing out medicinal plants for malaria, stomach ailments, and wounds. Cross crystal-clear forest streams and reach an area where wild honey is collected — if you’re lucky, your guides may find a hive and share nature’s purest sweetness. Set up Forest Camp 3 in a clearing by the river. Evening: the Ba’Aka perform polyphonic singing — their UNESCO-recognized vocal music, with its complex interlocking harmonies, echoing through the rainforest night — one of the most sublime cultural experiences in all of Africa. Overnight at Forest Camp 3.
Day 5: Lobaye → Bangui
Dawn forest walk — a final immersion in the sounds and smells of the Congo Basin rainforest. After breakfast, break camp and begin the trek back to the village. The return to civilization feels like traveling through time. Farewell to your Ba’Aka guides — their knowledge, humor, and deep connection to the forest will stay with you forever. Drive back to Bangui. Hot shower, cold drink, and reflection on an experience that very few travelers will ever have. Farewell dinner at Bangui’s best restaurant. Overnight in Bangui.
Day 6: Departure
Morning at the artisan market — Ba’Aka baskets, carved wooden figures, and Central African paintings. Transfer to Bangui M’Poko Airport. Your forest adventure concludes, but the memory of the Ba’Aka and their ancient relationship with the rainforest will endure.
