Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Bangui — Heart of Africa

Arrive at Bangui M’Poko International Airport. The Central African Republic is one of Africa’s least-visited countries, a land of vast rainforest, savanna, and extraordinary biodiversity. Bangui, the capital on the Ubangi River, is a city of wide boulevards and French colonial architecture. Check into your hotel. Evening: dinner at a riverside restaurant overlooking the Ubangi, where the Democratic Republic of Congo lies on the opposite bank. Overnight in Bangui.

Day 2: Fly to Bayanga — Gateway to Dzanga-Sangha

Charter flight (1.5 hours) southwest over unbroken rainforest canopy to Bayanga, the gateway village to the Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve. This 4,580 km² protected area is part of the Sangha Trinational UNESCO World Heritage site (shared with Cameroon and Republic of Congo) — one of the most pristine tropical rainforest ecosystems on Earth. Settle into your eco-lodge on the edge of the forest. Afternoon orientation and first forest walk with BaAka trackers, the forest’s indigenous people whose knowledge of the rainforest is unparalleled. Overnight at Bayanga eco-lodge.

Day 3: Dzanga Bai — The Elephant Gathering

Before dawn, drive to Dzanga Bai, a large forest clearing where mineral-rich springs draw wildlife from across the rainforest. From the raised observation platform (mirador), witness one of Africa’s greatest wildlife spectacles: 50-100 forest elephants gathering to drink the mineral water, dig for salt with their trunks, and socialize. The sheer concentration of these elusive forest giants in one open space is almost impossible to comprehend. Forest buffalo, red river hogs, and sitatunga antelope also visit. The platform allows you to observe for hours without disturbing the animals. Afternoon: forest walk tracking western lowland gorillas with BaAka guides and researchers from the Primate Habituation Programme. Overnight at Bayanga eco-lodge.

Day 4: Gorilla Tracking — Face to Face with Giants

Dawn departure for a second gorilla tracking experience. The Dzanga-Sangha habituated gorilla group (Makumba’s group) allows regulated visits. The trek through dense rainforest is challenging but the reward is extraordinary: sitting quietly as a silverback and his family forage, play, and interact just meters away. Western lowland gorillas are more arboreal than their mountain cousins — you may see juveniles climbing trees — and slightly smaller, but a silverback’s presence is no less commanding. After the one-hour observation period, return to the lodge. Afternoon at leisure or visit to a BaAka village to learn about their forest-dependent culture, traditional medicine, and the extraordinary polyphonic singing that has been recognized by UNESCO. Overnight at Bayanga eco-lodge.

Day 5: Sangha River & Mangrove Forest

Morning pirogue (dugout canoe) trip on the Sangha River, the lifeblood of this region. Glide past forest walls draped in lianas, watch for red colobus monkeys and hornbills overhead, and stop at sandbars where African skimmers nest. Visit Bai Hokou, a smaller bai where elephants, buffalo, and giant forest hogs come to feed. Afternoon: forest walk focusing on botany — the BaAka guides demonstrate which vines contain drinking water, which leaves treat malaria, and which bark becomes rope. Overnight at Bayanga eco-lodge.

Day 6: BaAka Cultural Immersion & Return to Bangui

Morning with the BaAka community: learn the art of net-hunting (traditional, using demonstration nets), try your hand at fire-making with forest materials, and witness a polyphonic singing ceremony — complex, layered harmonies that are unlike any music you’ve heard. Afternoon: charter flight back to Bangui. Evening: farewell dinner at a Bangui restaurant. Overnight in Bangui.

Day 7: Bangui & Depart

Morning visit to Bangui’s central market and the Boganda Museum of Central African arts. Transfer to airport.
