Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Cap-Haïtien — Arrival & City Discovery

Arrive at Cap-Haïtien Airport (CAP). Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon walking tour of Cap-Haïtien’s historic center: the Place d’Armes cathedral (Notre-Dame du Cap-Haïtien, built 1670-1694), the colonial architecture along Rue 18 and Rue 19, and the waterfront where Christopher Columbus’s Santa Maria ran aground in 1492 (near present-day Cap-Haïtien). Visit the Marché de Fer for a sensory introduction to Haitian daily life — mountains of tropical fruits, spices, and the sounds of Creole being spoken everywhere. Dinner at Lakay, a restaurant known for its authentic northern Haitian cuisine.

Day 2: Citadelle Laferrière & Sans Souci — Full Day

Early departure for Milot (30-minute drive). The adventure begins: horseback ride up the mountain to the Citadelle Laferrière (approx. 45 minutes). The fortress emerges from the clouds — 40m high walls, built by 20,000 workers, designed to house 5,000 soldiers. Your guide brings the history alive: stories of King Henri Christophe, Haiti’s revolutionary war against Napoleon’s France, and the incredible engineering feat of building this fortress on a mountain peak without modern machinery. Spend 2 hours exploring every corner — the cannon batteries, the cisterns that could hold a year’s water supply, the king’s quarters, and the endless views. Descend for lunch in Milot, then explore Sans Souci Palace — Christophe’s ambitious palace, once called the “Versailles of the Caribbean.” Though damaged by the 1842 earthquake, its grand staircase, formal gardens, and remaining walls evoke its former splendor. Return to Cap-Haïtien for a farewell dinner.

Day 3: Morning Market & Departure

Morning at leisure. Option to visit a local rum distillery (Rhum Barbancourt has roots in the north), explore more of Cap-Haïtien’s streets, or relax before your flight. Transfer to the airport. In just three days, you’ve experienced Haiti’s most powerful symbol of freedom and independence.
