Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive La Paz
Arrive at El Alto International Airport, the world’s highest international airport at 4,061 meters. Transfer to your hotel in La Paz. Take it easy today to acclimatize to the altitude — drink coca tea and rest. Evening optional walk along the Witches’ Market (Mercado de las Brujas) to see dried llama fetuses, potions, and offerings to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Overnight in La Paz.
Day 2: La Paz — Highest Capital in the World
Full day exploring La Paz. Ride the Mi Teleferico cable car system, the world’s highest and longest urban cable car, for breathtaking views of the city sprawling in the canyon below the Altiplano. Visit the Witches’ Market, San Francisco Church, and Plaza Murillo. Afternoon excursion to the Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna), a surreal landscape of clay and sandstone spires eroded into otherworldly formations. Evening at leisure. Overnight in La Paz.
Day 3: La Paz to Sucre — White City
Morning flight to Sucre, Bolivia’s constitutional capital and a UNESCO World Heritage city known as the “White City” for its colonial whitewashed buildings. Afternoon walking tour: the Casa de la Libertad where Bolivia’s Declaration of Independence was signed, the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Recoleta viewpoint. Visit the Cretaceous Park to see the world’s largest collection of dinosaur footprints — over 5,000 tracks on a vertical cliff face. Overnight in Sucre.
Day 4: Sucre — Free Day or Trekking
Free day in Sucre. Options: visit the colorful Tarabuco Market (Sundays only), where indigenous Yampara people sell their distinctive handwoven textiles; take a Spanish class at one of Sucre’s renowned language schools; or hike to the Maragua Crater, a massive geological formation with multicolored rock strata. Overnight in Sucre.
Day 5: Sucre to Potosi — Silver Mountain
Morning drive to Potosi, once the world’s richest city thanks to the silver of Cerro Rico (Rich Hill). At 4,090 meters, it’s one of the highest cities in the world. Afternoon visit to the Casa Nacional de la Moneda (National Mint), where Spanish colonial coins were once produced. Walk through the colonial streets and see the ornate churches that silver built. Overnight in Potosi.
Day 6: Potosi Mine Tour & Transfer to Uyuni
Morning optional tour into the working silver mines of Cerro Rico — an intense and eye-opening experience into the harsh realities of Bolivian mining that has continued for nearly 500 years. Visit miners still working in medieval conditions, and give them coca leaves and dynamite as gifts. Afternoon transfer to Uyuni across the stark Altiplano. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 7: Salar de Uyuni — Day 1
Begin your 3-day 4×4 expedition across Salar de Uyuni. Visit the Train Cemetery, enter the salt flat through Colchani, and explore Incahuasi Island with its giant cacti. Take perspective-bending photos on the endless white expanse. Sunset over the salt flat — an unforgettable spectacle as the sun paints the salt in shades of gold and crimson. Overnight in the famous salt hotel — everything from walls to furniture is made of salt blocks.
Day 8: Salar de Uyuni — Day 2, High Desert Lagoons
Continue south through the Siloli Desert, the driest desert in the world. Visit the high-altitude lagoons: Laguna Canapa, Laguna Hedionda, and Laguna Chiarkota, each hosting flamingo colonies. Stop at the Arbol de Piedra (Stone Tree) and enter Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve. Reach Laguna Colorada by late afternoon — watch thousands of flamingos against the crimson-red lake. Overnight at a basic refuge near the lake.
Day 9: Geysers, Hot Springs & Green Lagoon
Pre-dawn departure to Sol de Manana Geyser Field at 4,850 meters — walk among bubbling mud pots and steaming sulfur vents at sunrise. Soak in the Polques Hot Springs with views of snow-capped volcanoes. Visit Laguna Verde at the foot of Licancabur Volcano. Transfer to the Chilean border or return to Uyuni town. Farewell dinner with your group. Overnight in Uyuni.
Day 10: Uyuni to La Paz
Morning flight or bus back to La Paz. Free afternoon: do last-minute shopping at the Witches’ Market for alpaca wool scarves, silver jewelry, and artisanal crafts. Farewell dinner at a restaurant overlooking the illuminated city. Overnight in La Paz.
Day 11: La Paz Departure
