Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: La Paz to Uyuni — Train of the Clouds

Morning transfer from your La Paz hotel to the bus station. Enjoy a comfortable overnight bus or scenic day drive across the Altiplano to Uyuni, the gateway town to the world’s largest salt flat. Along the way, witness the stark beauty of the Bolivian highlands. Arrive in Uyuni in the evening. Briefing with your 4×4 driver-guide for the epic journey ahead. Overnight in Uyuni.

Day 2: Salar de Uyuni — The World’s Largest Mirror

Full day exploring Salar de Uyuni — 10,582 square kilometers of blinding white salt at 3,656 meters above sea level. Visit the Train Cemetery on the outskirts of Uyuni, where rusting steam locomotives from the early 20th century rest in the desert. Enter the salt flat through Colchani, a salt-processing village. Walk on the endless expanse of hexagonal salt patterns. Visit Incahuasi Island (Fish Island), a rocky outcrop covered in giant cacti up to 12 meters tall — climb to the top for 360-degree views of the salt flat. Afternoon photography session: take perspective-bending photos on the perfectly flat white surface. Watch the sunset turn the salt flat into a palette of gold, pink, and purple. Overnight in a salt hotel — yes, everything including beds and tables is made of salt blocks!

Day 3: Colored Lagoons & High Desert

Depart Uyuni heading south into the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. Enter the high desert (Siloli Desert) where the landscape transforms dramatically. Visit Laguna Canapa and Laguna Hedionda to see hundreds of flamingos — three species feed in these mineral-rich waters (James’s, Andean, and Chilean flamingos). Continue to the Arbol de Piedra (Stone Tree), a remarkable lava rock formation sculpted by wind erosion. Overnight at a basic refuge near Laguna Colorada at 4,300 meters.

Day 4: Laguna Colorada & Geysers

Pre-dawn departure to witness the sunrise at Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon). This stunning lake gets its deep red-rust color from algae and plankton that thrive in its mineral-rich, high-salinity waters. Thousands of James’s flamingos create a pink carpet against the crimson lake. Continue to the Sol de Manana Geyser Field at 4,850 meters — walk carefully among bubbling mud pots and steaming fumaroles at dawn. Soak in the Polques Hot Springs, natural thermal pools at 4,400 meters with views of the surrounding volcanoes. Visit Laguna Verde (Green Lagoon) at the foot of the Licancabur Volcano, whose emerald-green waters contrast with the white salt shores. Overnight in Uyuni or San Pedro de Atacama (Chile border).

Day 5: Return to Uyuni or Atacama

Depending on your itinerary, return to Uyuni town for onward travel or cross into Chile at the Hito Cajon border for transfer to San Pedro de Atacama. Morning visit to the Valley of Rocks with its surreal boulder formations. Arrive at your destination enriched by having experienced one of the most otherworldly landscapes on Earth.
