Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Algiers
Airport meet and greet. Transfer to hotel in central Algiers. Evening orientation walk along the waterfront. Overnight in Algiers.
Day 2: Algiers — The White City
Full day exploring Algiers. The Casbah (UNESCO), Martyrs’ Memorial, Notre Dame d’Afrique, the Bardo Museum. Walk the French colonial boulevards of the European quarter. Overnight in Algiers.
Day 3: Constantine — City of Bridges
Fly to Constantine, built on a plateau 650m above the Rhumel Gorge. Cross the Sidi M’Cid suspension bridge (175m above the gorge). Visit Ahmed Bey’s Ottoman Palace and the Casbah. Overnight in Constantine.
Day 4: Timgad — The Pompeii of Africa
Day trip to Timgad (UNESCO World Heritage), Rome’s African masterpiece. Founded by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD, Timgad was built on a perfect grid plan and has been called “the Pompeii of Africa” for its remarkable state of preservation. Walk the Decumanus Maximus — the main east-west avenue lined with columns — to the Arch of Trajan. Visit the forum, the 3,500-seat theater still used for performances, the public library (one of the few known Roman libraries with identifiable shelving), and the 14 public baths. The vast site, with the Aure’s Mountains as backdrop, gives you Rome without the crowds — you may be among the only visitors. Return to Constantine. Overnight.
Day 5: Djemila — Mountain Rome
Drive to Djemila (UNESCO). This 900m-elevation Roman city is extraordinarily intact, with its basilica, baptistery, forum, and theater all preserved in a mountain setting. The museum’s mosaics are world-class. Afternoon: drive to Algiers. Overnight in Algiers.
Day 6: Tipaza & Cherchell — Coast of Ruins
Day trip along the Mediterranean to Tipaza (UNESCO) — Roman ruins on the sea, with temples emerging from wildflowers. Continue to Cherchell’s archaeological museum. Overnight in Algiers.
Day 7: Ghardaia — M’zab Valley Millennium
Fly to Ghardaia. Walk the five fortified towns of the M’zab Valley (UNESCO), where Ibadi Berber architecture has stood unchanged for 1,000 years. The date palm oasis and its ancient water system create a brilliant green contrast with the desert. Overnight in Ghardaia.
Day 8: Beni Isguen & Desert Edge
Morning: visit Beni Isguen, the strictest of the M’zab towns, where centuries-old rules still govern daily life. Afternoon: excursion to the desert’s edge — golden dunes and the profound silence of the Sahara. Evening flight to Algiers. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Algiers.
Day 9: Departure
Airport transfer. You leave having explored Rome’s African provinces — better preserved and far less crowded than their Italian counterparts — and a millennium-old desert culture that persists in the heart of the Sahara.
