Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Sofia
Arrive at Sofia Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Evening orientation walk through the city center, passing the Alexander Nevski Cathedral lit up at night. Welcome briefing with your guide over coffee at a traditional café near the Cathedral. Overnight in Sofia.
Day 2: Sofia to Plovdiv — Bachkovo Monastery
Morning departure from Sofia. Stop at Bachkovo Monastery, Bulgaria’s second-largest monastery founded in 1083, with its beautiful frescoes and the miraculous Virgin Mary icon. Continue to Plovdiv, the cultural capital of Bulgaria. Afternoon guided walking tour of Plovdiv’s Old Town, the Roman Theater (built in the 1st century AD), and the Kapana creative district. Evening at leisure to explore Plovdiv’s vibrant café scene. Overnight in Plovdiv.
Day 3: Plovdiv to Veliko Tarnovo — Rose Valley & Shipka
Depart Plovdiv through the famous Valley of Roses. Visit Kazanlak, the heart of Bulgarian rose oil production. Stop at the Thracian Tomb of Kazanlak (UNESCO), a 4th-century BC masterpiece. Continue to the Shipka Pass and visit the striking Russian-style Shipka Memorial Church with its golden domes. Arrive in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s medieval capital. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 4: Veliko Tarnovo — Arbanasi & Tryavna
Morning visit to Tsarevets Fortress, the dramatic medieval stronghold of Bulgarian tsars. Continue to the historic village of Arbanasi for a tour of its 17th-century fortified houses and the Konstantsalieva House. Drive to Tryavna, a charming Renaissance town known for its woodcarving tradition, with its distinctive clock tower and stone bridge. Return to Veliko Tarnovo for a farewell dinner. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo.
Day 5: Troyan Monastery & Sofia Departure
Morning visit to Troyan Monastery, the third-largest in Bulgaria, nestled in the Balkan Mountains and famous for its wood-carved iconostasis. Drive back to Sofia through scenic mountain passes. Arrive at Sofia Airport for departure. Take with you memories of Bulgaria’s golden-domed churches, ancient ruins, and medieval fortresses.
