Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Maputo
Welcome to Maputo, Mozambique’s vibrant capital. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation walk through the Baixa — Maputo’s downtown where Art Deco buildings sit alongside Portuguese colonial architecture. Visit the iconic Central Railway Station — designed by Gustave Eiffel’s workshop, often called one of the most beautiful train stations in the world. Evening at the Feira Popular for grilled chicken and live marrabenta music. Overnight in Maputo.
Day 2: Maputo City Tour
Full day exploring Maputo. Morning: the Iron House (Casa de Ferro), designed by Eiffel himself; the Statue of Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first president; and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Visit the National Art Museum and the Nucleo de Arte — a cooperative of Mozambique’s finest contemporary artists. Afternoon at the Central Market (Mercado Central) for cashew nuts, piri-piri, and capulana fabrics. Evening seafood dinner on the Marginal — Maputo’s oceanfront promenade. Overnight in Maputo.
Day 3: Inhaca Island
Ferry across Maputo Bay to Inhaca Island. Visit the Marine Biology Museum and the Inhaca lighthouse for panoramic views. Hike through the forest reserve to Ponta Torres. Snorkel in the coral reefs at the southern tip. Fresh seafood lunch on the beach. Afternoon at the Portuguese Island beach — crystal-clear waters and white sand. Return ferry to Maputo. Overnight in Maputo.
Day 4: Maputo to Ponta do Ouro
Drive south along the coast to Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique’s premier diving destination on the border with South Africa. The drive passes through Maputo Special Reserve — spot elephants, hippos, and antelopes en route. Arrive at the beach village — a laid-back paradise of thatched lodges, sandy streets, and an endless beach. Sunset at the beach bar. Overnight in Ponta do Ouro.
Day 5: Diving & Dolphins
Morning ocean safari — Ponta do Ouro is one of the world’s best places to swim with wild dolphins. The resident bottlenose pod has been studied for over 20 years and is accustomed to respectful human interaction. Afternoon scuba diving or snorkeling at Pinnacles Reef — potato bass, turtles, rays, and reef sharks. Evening beach bonfire. Overnight in Ponta do Ouro.
Day 6: Ponta Beach & Quad Biking
Morning quad bike tour through the coastal dunes and along the beach — ride for kilometers on empty sand. Visit the lighthouse at Ponta do Ouro Southern point. Afternoon at leisure: beach, swimming, or visit the local market for Mozambican crafts. Watch the sunset from the dune tops. Overnight in Ponta do Ouro.
Day 7: Maputo Special Reserve & Return
Morning visit to Maputo Special Reserve (formerly Maputo Elephant Reserve) for a game drive. Spot elephants, hippos in the lakes, and over 300 bird species. The reserve uniquely combines bush and beach — you can see elephants with the Indian Ocean as a backdrop. Drive back to Maputo. Farewell dinner at a renowned Maputo seafood restaurant. Overnight in Maputo.
Day 8: Depart Maputo
Morning visit to the FEIMA craft market for last-minute purchases — Makonde sculptures, batik paintings, and capulana fabrics. Transfer to Maputo International Airport. Adeus!
