Itinerary Highlights

Days 1-2: Arrive Niamey — Niger’s River Capital

Land in Niamey on the banks of the Niger River — the third-longest river in Africa. Day 1: city orientation — visit the Grande Mosquée, the National Museum of Niger (excellent ethnographic and paleontology exhibits including dinosaur fossils from the Ténéré), and the Grand Marché. Day 2: visit the W National Park (UNESCO) — one of West Africa’s last strongholds for West African lions, elephants, cheetahs, and hippos. Piragua (canoe) trip on the Niger River at sunset. Overnight in Niamey.

Days 3-4: Journey to Agadez — Gateway to the Sahara

Fly to Agadez — the legendary Sahara trading city and UNESCO World Heritage site. Agadez has been a crossroads of trans-Saharan trade for over 600 years. Day 3: explore the old town — a labyrinth of mud-brick houses, narrow alleyways, and ornate Hausa architecture. Visit the Grand Mosque of Agadez with its 27m mud-brick minaret — the tallest mud structure in the world, rebuilt in 1844 in the Sudano-Sahelian style. Day 4: visit the Sultan’s Palace (the Sultan of Aïr still holds traditional authority), the camel market (one of West Africa’s largest), and the Tuareg silversmiths’ quarter where artisans craft the famous Agadez Cross — a symbol of Tuareg identity. Overnight in Agadez.

Days 5-10: Ténéré Desert & Aïr Mountains Expedition

Six-day expedition into the Ténéré — one of the most remote deserts on Earth. Journey by 4×4 through landscapes of surreal beauty:

• Aïr Mountains: A granite massif rising from the desert, with hidden oases, prehistoric rock art, and Tuareg encampments. Visit Timia oasis with its date palms and citrus orchards — an impossibly green jewel in the ochre desert
• Ténéré Desert: The “desert within a desert” — vast sand seas (ergs), gravel plains (regs), and the famous Arbre du Ténéré (Tree of Ténéré) site — once the most isolated tree on Earth (now replaced by a metal sculpture)
• Tuareg Encounters: Spend time with Tuareg (Kel Tamasheq) nomads — the “Blue Men of the Desert.” Learn about their indigo-dyed turbans, silver jewelry, camel culture, and matrilineal traditions unique in the Islamic world. Share tea ceremony (three cups: bitter like death, strong like life, sweet like love)
• Dune Camping: Camp among the Great Erg of Bilma dunes — some reaching 300m. Climb a dune for sunrise. Sleep under the Sahara’s incomparable star canopy
• Bilma Oasis: Visit the Bilma salt pans where, for centuries, salt caravans have extracted salt blocks using traditional methods. Watch the ancient salt-cutting process and meet the Kanuri salt traders

Accommodation: camping with Tuareg guides, tents, camp beds, and a mobile kitchen crew.

Days 11-12: Gerewol Festival (Seasonal) or Return Journey

If timing aligns with the Gerewol Festival (September-October, when Wodaabe nomads gather in southern Niger), attend this extraordinary courtship celebration — if not in this part of Niger, your guide will adjust routing. Otherwise, explore the Zinder region with its Sultan’s Palace and the impressive Hausa architecture of the old city. Visit the Kouré Giraffe Reserve to see the last wild West African giraffes — a unique population that shares the land peacefully with local farmers.

Days 13-15: Return to Niamey — Depart

Drive back to Niamey, arriving Day 13. Day 14: relax, visit artisans, last Niger River sunset. Day 15: depart. You’ve traveled through one of the world’s least-visited regions and experienced the legendary hospitality of the Sahara’s people.
