Itinerary Highlights
Days 1-2: Tangkahan Elephant Sanctuary
Arrive Medan, drive to Tangkahan (4-5 hours) — the “Hidden Paradise” of Sumatra, on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park. Morning elephant bathing in the Buluh River — washing rescued Sumatran elephants (critically endangered) as they spray water and rumble with pleasure. Jungle walk to a waterfall, river tubing back to the village. The Tangkahan Conservation Response Unit is a model of community-based conservation — former illegal loggers now work as rangers and mahouts.
Days 3-4: Bukit Lawang Orangutan Trek
Jungle transfer to Bukit Lawang (2 hours), the premier Sumatran orangutan viewing site. Full-day jungle trek in Gunung Leuser National Park (UNESCO, 7,927 km² of 50-million-year-old rainforest) searching for Sumatran orangutans — watch a 90 kg male with cheek pads move through the canopy with impossible grace. The rainforest symphony: gibbons singing territorial songs, Thomas’s leaf monkeys with their mohawks, hornbills overhead. Return via river tubing on the Bohorok River.
Days 5-6: Lake Toba & Samosir Island
Drive to Parapat on Lake Toba — the world’s largest volcanic lake (1,130 km², formed 74,000 years ago by the largest eruption in 25 million years). Ferry to Samosir Island, almost the size of Singapore. Explore the Batak culture: Ambarita’s stone court (ancient execution table and ancestor-chairs), Tomok’s ancient tombs, and local weavers creating ulos cloth. Swim in the lake, kayak the shoreline, watch clouds drift over the mountains.
Day 7: Return Medan & Depart
Ferry back, drive to Medan. Visit Maimun Palace (1888, Malay-Mughal-Italian fusion) and farewell Sumatran meal of rendang, soto Medan, and durian. Departure.
