Days 1-3: Delhi & Agra

The classic Golden Triangle start: Delhi’s Old & New (cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar), Agra’s Taj Mahal at dawn and the mighty Agra Fort. The Mughal monuments are even more poignant when you know tigers once roamed their grounds — the Mughal emperors were enthusiastic hunters (Akbar hunted with trained cheetahs), and the royal hunting grounds of Ranthambore would later become India’s premier tiger reserve.

Day 4: Agra to Ranthambore — Via Fatehpur Sikri

Morning: stop at Fatehpur Sikri (UNESCO), Akbar’s magnificent abandoned capital. Continue to Ranthambore National Park (4-5 hours). Ranthambore (392 sq km) was the private hunting reserve of the Maharajas of Jaipur until 1955, when it became a wildlife sanctuary. In 1973, it was one of the first nine reserves under India’s Project Tiger — a national conservation initiative launched by Indira Gandhi when India’s tiger population had plummeted below 2,000 (from approximately 40,000 in 1900). Today India has approximately 3,600 wild tigers (75% of the global population) and Ranthambore is one of the best places to see them. The park’s unique feature: a 10th-century fort (Ranthambore Fort, UNESCO) sits atop a hill at the park’s center, creating surreal safari scenes — tigers walking past thousand-year-old ruins, leopards draped over temple walls. Check into your jungle lodge. Afternoon game drive (safari) in a canter (20-seat open vehicle) or gypsy (6-seat jeep) — the park is divided into 10 zones, and your permit determines which zone. Even if tigers remain elusive, Ranthambore compensates with leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, jackals, sambar deer (the tiger’s favorite prey — one tiger kills approximately 50 sambar per year), marsh crocodiles, and over 270 bird species. Overnight near Ranthambore.

Day 5: Ranthambore — Full Day Safari

Morning and afternoon safaris. Ranthambore’s tigers are among the most photographed in the world — they’re habituated to vehicles and often walk along the roads as casually as domestic cats. Famous individuals include Machli (T-16), “The Queen of Ranthambore” (died 2016 at age 20, the oldest documented wild tigress, mother to 11 cubs, and the most photographed tiger in the world) and her descendants. The lake areas (Padam Talao, Raj Bagh Talao, Malik Talao) are the most productive for sightings in hot weather — tigers frequently cool off in the water. The ruins of hunting lodges, chhatris (cenotaphs), and temples scattered throughout the park create an atmosphere unlike any other tiger reserve — you’re wildlife viewing inside an archaeological site. Between safaris: visit Dastkar Ranthambore, a women’s cooperative selling handcrafted textiles and products, funded by the revenues from tiger tourism to provide alternative livelihoods to communities that once depended on the forest. Overnight near Ranthambore.

Day 6-8: Ranthambore to Jaipur & Departure

Morning game drive (your final chance to spot the striped predator), then drive to Jaipur (3 hours). Days 7-8 cover Jaipur: Amber Fort, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, the pink-painted bazaars. Depart from Jaipur International Airport — with Taj Mahal memories, Rajasthan’s royal hues, and (fingers crossed) the golden eyes of a wild tiger staring back at you from the ancient ruins of Ranthambore.
