Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Istanbul
Two full days in the city that was the capital of three empires (Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman). Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, Basilica Cistern, Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar, and Bosphorus cruise. Istanbul is a city where you can have breakfast in Europe and lunch in Asia — literally, by taking a 20-minute ferry across the Bosphorus.
Day 3: Istanbul to Kuşadası — Ephesus
Morning flight to Izmir. Full day at Ephesus (UNESCO): the Library of Celsus (one of the ancient world’s greatest libraries), the Great Theatre (25,000 capacity, St. Paul preached here), the Terrace Houses (Roman villas with frescoes and mosaics), and the House of the Virgin Mary. Overnight in Kuşadası.
Day 4: Pamukkale & Hierapolis
The Cotton Castle: white travertine terraces formed by 14,000 years of calcium-rich hot springs. Swim in Cleopatra’s Pool among Roman columns. Hierapolis above the terraces: Roman theatre (12,000 seats), the vast necropolis (1,200 tombs), and the Plutonium (“Gate to Hell”). Afternoon drive to Antalya (4 hours through the Taurus Mountains). Overnight in Antalya.
Day 5: Antalya — Turquoise Coast
Full day on the Turkish Riviera. Morning: Antalya Old Town (Kaleiçi) — a maze of Ottoman-era houses, Hadrian’s Gate (130 AD, built for the emperor’s visit — still standing beautifully), the 13th-century Yivli Minare (Fluted Minaret, Antalya’s symbol), and the Roman harbor (now a yacht marina with views of the Beydağları Mountains). Afternoon: Düden Waterfalls — the Upper Düden (a peaceful park setting) and Lower Düden (waterfalls plunging 40m directly into the Mediterranean from the cliffs — best seen from a boat). Optional: boat trip along the Antalya coast or relax at Konyaaltı Beach (7km of pebble beach with mountain backdrop). Overnight in Antalya.
Day 6: Antalya to Konya — Sufi Mysticism
Drive to Konya (5 hours through the Taurus Mountains and central Anatolian plateau). Konya is the spiritual heart of Turkey — the city of Rumi (Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, 1207-1273), the Sufi mystic and poet whose words (“Come, come, whoever you are…”) have touched souls across centuries and cultures. Visit the Mevlana Museum — the mausoleum of Rumi, with its green-tiled conical dome (the Kubbe-i Hadra — Green Dome), the tomb of Rumi (his sarcophagus covered in gold-embroidered velvet, a gift from Sultan Abdulhamid II), and exhibits of Sufi artifacts including Rumi’s original manuscripts, musical instruments, and the world’s smallest Quran. The atmosphere in the museum is profoundly moving — pilgrims from across the world visit in tears, and the devotional music playing softly adds to the spiritual intensity. Afternoon: visit the Karatay Medrese (a 13th-century Seljuk theological school, now a tile museum — the Seljuk tile work, with its geometric patterns and deep turquoise, is among the finest in the Islamic world). Evening: attend a Whirling Dervish Sema ceremony at the Mevlana Cultural Center. Overnight in Konya.
Day 7-8: Cappadocia
Drive to Cappadocia (3 hours via Sultanhanı Caravanserai — a 13th-century Seljuk roadside inn on the Silk Road, one of the best-preserved in Anatolia, where merchants and their camels rested under the protection of the sultan). Two full days in the fairy chimney landscape: Göreme Open-Air Museum (UNESCO), Pasabag (Monks Valley), Derinkuyu Underground City (8 levels, 85m deep, sheltered 20,000 people), Rose Valley hike, Avanos pottery workshop, and the essential hot air balloon ride at dawn (optional, ~$280). Two nights in a cave hotel — sleeping in a room carved into the tuff, with windows overlooking the fairy chimneys, is a uniquely Cappadocian experience.
Day 9: Cappadocia to Istanbul
Morning optional balloon flight if not taken on Day 7. Fly back to Istanbul. Afternoon: free time — revisit the Grand Bazaar, explore the hip Karaköy district (the gallery and café quarter), or take a ferry to the Asian side (Kadıköy — the foodie paradise of Istanbul, with its famous fish market, meyhanes, and moda ice cream shops). Farewell dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Bosphorus. Overnight in Istanbul.
Day 10: Departure
Transfer to airport. Ten days, ten millennia of history, and the taste of Turkish tea and simit (sesame bread rings) on the ferry — the memories of Turkey linger long after the journey ends.
