Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Tbilisi
Welcome to Georgia. Transfer to your hotel. Evening walk through Tbilisi Old Town — the sulfur baths’ brick domes, Metekhi Church on the cliff, and the Bridge of Peace glowing over the Mtkvari River. Welcome dinner at a traditional Georgian restaurant. Overnight in Tbilisi.
Day 2: Tbilisi & Mtskheta
Morning: explore Mtskheta (UNESCO). Jvari Monastery commanding the river confluence, and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (Georgia’s Westminster Abbey). Afternoon: Tbilisi — cable car to Narikala Fortress, the Old Town’s winding streets, and the National Museum’s Colchian gold treasures. Evening: Georgian supra feast with tamada (toastmaster) leading the traditional ritual of toasts and polyphonic singing — a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage experience. Overnight in Tbilisi.
Day 3: Kazbegi — Into the Caucasus
The Georgian Military Highway. Ananuri Fortress. The Soviet-era Friendship Monument above a 2,000m drop. Mount Kazbek’s 5,047m peak. Hike to Gergeti Trinity Church — the image of the stone church against the glacier-capped mountain is the Caucasus at its most sublime. Overnight in Kazbegi.
Day 4: Kakheti Wine Country
Descend to the Alazani Valley. Bodbe Monastery and Signagi’s walled hilltown. Wine tasting: learn about 8,000 years of qvevri winemaking, taste amber wines made with skin contact, and sample Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. Churchkhela-making demonstration. Overnight in Signagi.
Day 5: Uplistsikhe & Gori
The 3,000-year-old cave city of Uplistsikhe — halls, wine cellars, a pharmacy, and a theater all carved from rock. Stalin’s birthplace and museum in Gori — a preserved piece of 20th-century history with the dictator’s personal railway carriage. Return to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.
