Day 1: Arrive Beirut — City of Contrasts
Arrive Beirut. Afternoon exploration: Beirut’s downtown — the rebuilt city center, Roman Baths, Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque, St. George Cathedral, and Zaitunay Bay waterfront. Evening: Lebanese mezze dinner in Gemmayzeh — hummus, baba ghanoush, kibbeh, tabbouleh, and arak. In Beirut, the food alone justifies the trip — Lebanese cuisine is among the world’s finest. Overnight in Beirut.
Day 2: Jeita Grotto & Byblos — 7,000 Years of History
Morning: Jeita Grotto — the stunning limestone cave system with the world’s largest stalactite and an underground lake navigated by boat. Continue to Byblos (UNESCO) — one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities (7,000 years). Explore the Crusader Castle, Bronze Age temples, Roman theatre, and the charming souk and harbor. Byblos gave its name to the Bible — this is where the alphabet was first developed by the Phoenicians. Overnight in Beirut.
Day 3: Baalbek — Rome’s Greatest Temples & Bekaa Wine
Full-day Baalbek (UNESCO). The Temple of Jupiter — built with stones weighing up to 1,000 tonnes — and the Temple of Bacchus, the best-preserved Roman temple anywhere. These 2,000-year-old monuments in the Bekaa Valley are one of the world’s great archaeological sites. Afternoon: visit a Bekaa winery — Chateau Ksara or Chateau Musar — Lebanon’s ancient wine tradition continues with world-class results. Overnight in Beirut.
Day 4: Sidon & Tyre — Phoenician Coast
Drive south: Sidon’s Crusader Sea Castle and traditional souk with its soap makers and spice merchants. Continue to Tyre (UNESCO) — the Roman Hippodrome (one of the largest and best-preserved), triumphal arch, and necropolis. Tyre was the most powerful Phoenician city-state, and its archaeological treasures rival Baalbek. Option to swim at Tyre’s excellent public beach. Overnight in Beirut.
Day 5: Beirut National Museum & Departure
Morning: National Museum — the world’s finest Phoenician collection, Roman mosaics, and artifacts that survived the civil war hidden in basement vaults. Then transfer to airport — taking with you the taste of Lebanon that lingers long after the flight home.
