Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Catania — Volcanic Welcome
Land at Catania Airport with Mount Etna smoldering on the horizon. Transfer to your hotel in Catania. Afternoon: walking tour of Catania’s lava-built city — Piazza del Duomo with its elephant fountain carved from black lava stone (Sicily’s symbol), Via Etnea (the main street pointing straight at the volcano), and the Roman amphitheater. Welcome dinner featuring Sicilian specialties. Overnight in Catania.
Day 2: Mount Etna Summit Trek
Full-day Etna adventure. Early start with 4×4 transport to 2,900m. Guided trek across the volcanic moonscape of the summit crater area — steaming fumaroles, black sand, and the knowledge that the mountain erupted as recently as 2023. The Valle del Bove depression provides a 5km-wide amphitheater of geological drama. Your volcanologist guide explains the dynamics of Etna’s four summit craters and 300+ flank vents. Descend through ancient lava flows to visit a lava tube cave (helmet and headlamp provided). Afternoon: relax at a mountain refuge with panoramic views and picnic lunch of local products. Return to Catania. Overnight in Catania.
Day 3: Taormina & Alcantara Gorges
Morning: drive to the Alcantara Gorges — a spectacular geological formation where a river has carved basalt columns into surreal hexagonal shapes (like a miniature Giant’s Causeway in Sicily). Wade (or body-raft in summer) through the gorge’s cool waters. Continue to Taormina for the Teatro Greco and medieval town exploration. Afternoon hike: the Sentiero dei Saraceni path along the coast from Taormina to Castelmola, a higher village perched on a rocky outcrop — the views stretch from Etna to Calabria on clear days. Overnight in Taormina.
Day 4: Syracuse & Cavagrande Canyon
Morning: drive south. Stop at Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve — a spectacular canyon 300m deep with emerald-green natural pools at the bottom. Descend (moderate hike, 1.5 hours each way) to swim in pristine freshwater lakes carved by millennia of river flow, surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation. Afternoon: Syracuse Neapolis Archaeological Park and Ortygia island. Optional sea kayaking around Ortygia’s sea walls and sea caves at sunset. Overnight in Syracuse.
Day 5: Vendicari Nature Reserve & Marzamemi
Morning: coastal hike through Vendicari Nature Reserve — 1,500 hectares of protected coastline with salt pans, pristine beaches, and the famous Tonnara (ancient tuna fishery). The reserve is a crucial stopover for migrating birds between Africa and Europe, including flamingos that winter in the salt pans. Visit the 15th-century Swabian watchtower and the Byzantine church. Afternoon: Marzamemi fishing village for fresh seafood lunch. Drive to Agrigento region. Overnight near Agrigento.
Day 6: Valley of Temples & Scala dei Turchi
Sunrise walk at the Valley of the Temples (optional but worth it — the golden light on the 2,400-year-old temples is magical). After full morning exploring the temples, head to the Scala dei Turchi — scale the white marl cliffs and find a private ledge above the turquoise water for swimming and sunbathing. Afternoon: drive to the Zingaro Nature Reserve area. Overnight near Scopello.
Day 7: Zingaro Reserve Hike & Departure
Morning: hike the Zingaro Nature Reserve — Sicily’s first protected area, 7km of pristine Mediterranean coastline with seven cala (coves) accessible by footpath. Swim at Cala dell’Uzzo with its prehistoric cave where 10,000-year-old human remains were found. The trail passes through dwarf palm forests, past abandoned watchtowers, with views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Afternoon: drive to Palermo Airport for departure, with a final stop at the Tonnara di Scopello (ancient tuna fishery set against dramatic faraglioni sea stacks).
