Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Abidjan
Welcome to Abidjan, the “Paris of Africa.” Airport transfer to your hotel in the Plateau business district. Evening walk along the Boulevard de la Republique to see the city’s modern skyline — including La Pyramide and the stunning Saint Paul’s Cathedral. Welcome dinner featuring attieke (fermented cassava couscous) and grilled fish. Overnight in Abidjan.
Day 2: Abidjan City Tour
Full day exploring Abidjan: the Banco National Park in the heart of the city — a preserved primary rainforest with walking trails and 500-year-old trees. Visit the National Museum, the Cocody district with its luxury residences, and the Treichville market. Afternoon ferry to the Plateau for panoramic skyline views. Evening at a maquis (local open-air restaurant) for braise — grilled meats with alloco (fried plantains). Overnight in Abidjan.
Day 3: Grand-Bassam — UNESCO Colonial Town
Drive east to Grand-Bassam, the former French colonial capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk the Rue du Commerce lined with beautifully decaying colonial buildings. Visit the Costume Museum housed in the former Governor’s Palace, and the National Museum of Costume. Afternoon at the beach — golden sand, Atlantic waves, and beachside maquis. Overnight in Grand-Bassam.
Day 4: Artisans Village & Assinie Beach
Morning at the Grand-Bassam Artisans Village watching sculptors, batik makers, and jewelers at work. Drive to Assinie, Cote d’Ivoire’s premier beach destination — a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic and the Aby Lagoon. Boat trip through the lagoon mangroves. Afternoon at leisure on coconut-fringed beaches. Fresh lobster dinner. Overnight in Assinie.
Day 5: Yamoussoukro — Basilica of Our Lady of Peace
Journey inland to Yamoussoukro, the political capital. Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace — the largest Christian church in the world, larger even than St. Peter’s in Rome. Marvel at its 158-meter dome, Italian marble columns, and French stained glass windows. Tour the Presidential Palace (exterior) and the sacred crocodile lake where caretakers feed the crocodiles. Overnight in Yamoussoukro.
Day 6: Abengourou — Kingdom of Indenie
Visit Abengourou in eastern Cote d’Ivoire, heart of the Agni kingdom. Meet the King of Indenie in his palace and learn about Akan royal traditions that link Cote d’Ivoire to Ghana. Visit the Museum of Akan Culture. Afternoon cocoa plantation tour — Cote d’Ivoire is the world’s #1 cocoa producer, and you’ll see the entire chocolate-making process from bean to bar. Return to Abidjan. Overnight in Abidjan.
Day 7: Depart Abidjan
Morning visit to the CAVA Art Center (Centre d’Art et de la Vie Africaine) for last-minute purchases of Ivorian masks, sculptures, and fabrics. Transfer to Felix Houphouet-Boigny International Airport. A bientot!
