Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Windhoek
Land at Hosea Kutako International Airport. Transfer to Windhoek — a city where German colonial architecture meets African vitality. Afternoon: visit the Christuskirche (1910), the Independence Memorial Museum, and the Old Brewery Craft Market. Welcome dinner at Joe’s Beerhouse, a Windhoek institution serving Namibian game meats (oryx, kudu, springbok). Overnight in Windhoek.
Day 2: Windhoek to Sossusvlei — Into the Namib
Drive south through the Khomas Hochland mountains into the Namib Desert, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn. Arrive at your lodge near Sesriem mid-afternoon. Evening: sundowner hike on Elim Dune — your first taste of the red sand sea. Overnight at a desert lodge.
Day 3: Sossusvlei — Dunes at Dawn
Pre-dawn: climb Dune 45 for sunrise. Then 4×4 into Sossusvlei and Deadvlei — walk among the 900-year-old camelthorn skeletons on the white clay pan. Afternoon: Sesriem Canyon exploration. Overnight at the desert lodge.
Day 4: Sossusvlei to Swakopmund — Desert Meets Ocean
Drive northwest through the Namib-Naukluft National Park, crossing the Tropic of Capricorn again. Stop at Solitaire for obligatory apple pie. The landscape transitions from red dunes to gravel plains to the dramatic meeting of desert and ocean at Walvis Bay. Visit the Walvis Bay lagoon, a RAMSAR wetland site hosting thousands of flamingos — the contrast of pink birds feeding against the backdrop of sand dunes that plunge into the Atlantic is uniquely Namibian. Continue to Swakopmund, where German colonial buildings (built 1884-1915) look like a Bavarian village transported to Africa. Overnight in Swakopmund.
Day 5: Skeleton Coast Day Trip
The Skeleton Coast is one of the world’s most haunting coastlines — named for the whale bones and shipwrecks littering its shores, it stretches 500km of desert meeting tempestuous Atlantic. Only 2mm of rain falls annually, and the cold Benguela Current creates dense fog that has doomed countless ships. Drive north to Cape Cross Seal Reserve — home to one of the world’s largest Cape fur seal colonies (200,000+ seals). The sight, sound, and smell of this roiling mass of seals is overwhelming. Continue past shipwrecks, the rusted remains of the Zeila trawler (beached 2008) being the most accessible. Afternoon: return to Swakopmund for free exploration — this town is Namibia’s adventure center, with options for quad biking in the dunes, sandboarding, or scenic flights. Overnight in Swakopmund.
Day 6: Swakopmund to Damaraland — Ancient Rock Art
Morning: visit the Moon Landscape, a bizarre valley of eroded hills that looks so otherworldly that parts of the film “The Cell” were shot here. Then drive inland to Damaraland. Visit Twyfelfontein (UNESCO) — 2,500+ rock engravings, the densest concentration in Africa. The San artists who created these petroglyphs 6,000 years ago depicted the animals they hunted and the shamans who entered trance states to connect with the spirit world. The famous “Lion Man” engraving shows a lion with a human tail ending in a pugmark — a shaman in transformed state. Afternoon: search for desert-adapted elephants in the ephemeral Huab River. These elephants have home ranges of up to 7,000 sq km (40 times larger than East African elephants) and can go four days without drinking. Overnight at a Damaraland lodge.
Day 7: Spitzkoppe & Return to Windhoek
Morning: visit the Spitzkoppe, the “Matterhorn of Namibia” — a granite inselberg rising 1,784m from the desert floor, one of the most photographed mountains in Africa. The San rock art in its caves, particularly the “Bushman’s Paradise” shelter, shows detailed hunting scenes. Drive back to Windhoek for a final dinner. Overnight in Windhoek.
Day 8: Departure
Morning at leisure for last-minute crafts shopping. Transfer to Windhoek Airport for departure.
